Chapter 2: Powers, Gear, and Justice?

Adam made his way to the train cart his wristwatch pointed him towards. Today was the day everyone on the train would finally understand what they were talking about yesterday about powers and gear. On the way to the area he ran into Alex.

“Shouldn’t you be much farther ahead from me?” Adam asked Alex.

“Yea probably, I just got lost because I tried looking for those flat escalators they have in airports. Sadly, they did not have them, at least where I was looking. Wanna head to the area together?”

Adam and Alex headed towards the train cart they needed to get to, chatting along the way.

“Dude, my dorm mate is freaking sick!” Alex said. “We stayed up all night doing karaoke because he just happened to have a karaoke machine inside his luggage! Man, that was just the best! If being Trainer means I get to have a karaoke partner whenever I’d like, I’m totally hyped up for the rest of the stuff that comes with being a Trainer. What about you, how’s your dorm mate?”

“Dunno,” Adam replied. “She had a lot of plushies, I guess.”

A few minutes later they arrived at the train cart. It looked similar to the cart with the stage, except now the stage was in the middle of the cart, and it was surrounded by the couches. Adam and Alex claimed one of the few unoccupied seats and waited, yet again, for people to arrive on the stage.

“What do you think they meant when they said we’ll get powers and gear here?” Adam asked Alex.

“I don’t know dude. It would be hella sick if it was like MHA and I got some super cool power that lets me punch things. But I’m also curious if we won’t be getting sick ass superpowers and instead the word ‘power’ means something else that I haven’t thought of yet.”

While they were talking, Adam noticed May walking up to their couch.

“Do you mind if I sit with you guys?” She asked. “I overslept today, and only realized I did once I looked around the room and saw Adam missing!”

“You left your dorm mate?” Alex asked Adam. “Wait, I can’t judge you on that. I left my dorm mate too! He overslept, coincidentally.”

The three chatted for a while until a man in grey robes stepped on the stage, and the whole room became silent.

“I know some of you are most likely wondering what we meant by ‘powers and gear’ yesterday. Today, you will finally find out what we meant by that. We will select random people in this room to step up here and receive their power and gear. We will all be respectful to the person going up here, which means no talking amongst yourselves, at least not out loud. First up, Clyde Obersky.”

A hulking teenager made his way on the stage. He was in decent shape, had curly black hair, and dark brown skin.

“Please sit in that seat right there.” The robed man said to Clyde. He pointed towards a chair that was not there before.

Clyde sat down in the chair, hyped up on what they meant by people getting powers. A red circle appeared around the chair, and Clyde was engulfed in bright red flames. Everyone in the room was tense, not knowing what to expect from this. The robed man stood patiently near the chair. Finally, after some time, Clyde emerged from the chair as the flames disappeared. Everyone, including Clyde, received a notification. The notification read, “Clyde’s new power title is: The übermütig Flame.”

“The hell does uber-something mean?” Clyde thought aloud.

“Next person!” The robed man announced as Clyde walked off stage.

The next few hours were people going on the stage, the circle changing its look based on what power was to be received, and then everyone knowing what the power was. It never got boring because of how much of a spectacle was created whenever someone sat on that chair.

“Alex Williams!” The robed man announced after someone walked off stage.

“Hell yea!” Alex yelled. “Yo Adam, wish me luck up there! I’m gonna be freaking All Might today!”

Alex sat in the chair and a yellow circle appeared around him. The yellow circle then surrounded the chair in a golden shower, completely covering Alex. The gold shined brightly despite the lights in the train cart not being that bright. After a few seconds, Alex stepped out of the chair and looked at his wristwatch. “Alex’s new power title is: The Shining Drowner”

“Drowner?” Alex thought aloud as he made his way back to his seat. “Hey Adam, do you think some of these power names are kind of weird? Like what if they predict the future, or maybe it’s all just some random bull?”

“If it did predict the future, at least you’ll drown shining, right?” Adam joked.

“May- Uhh, there’s no last name to this one. Whoever May without a last name is, please step up.”

“Yay, it’s my turn!” May said. “I wonder what mine’s gonna be?”

May sat in the chair, and the circle turned pink. Soon, beautiful butterflies rose out of the circle to cover May, and little specks of green were being emitted off of the butterflies. May stepped out afterwards and checked her wristwatch. “May’s new power title is: The Healing Factor.”

“Oh cool, I’m like those healers from video games!” May said as she sat back down with Adam and Alex. “I wonder why that one guy got the word ‘Overconfident’ in German?”

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

  “You speak German?” Adam asked.

“Yea, I thought it would be fun to just learn a random language, and that random language happened to be German!”

“My dumbass only speaks English.” Alex said with a sigh.

More people claimed their powers, and for some reason, a few also got German words in their power titles. This confused some people, until people started getting other languages in their power titles. Spanish, German, Chinese, and more were being included in the titles. The whispering in the room turned to talking, and soon the robed man stopped the ceremony for a bit.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” He announced. “Please settle down. The power titles being in different languages means something that we cannot tell you. What I will say is to pay attention to them, they may be important someday.”

That lowered down the voices of everyone, but also raised more questions. How would they be more important? In what way were they more important? Why couldn’t he tell them the real reason?

The ceremony continued, and soon enough, Adam was called.

  “Adam Wekonson!”

Alex and May wished him luck, and he sat in the chair. A brown circle appeared around him, and soon he was surrounded by a waterfall of bullet casings. While in the chair, Adam smelt gunpowder, but also wood. He heard the sound of a judge’s gavel hitting something, and then everything cleared. He stepped out of the chair, confused on why there was a seemingly random assortment of noises and smells that occurred. He looked down at his wristwatch and saw his new power. “Adam’s new power title is: The First and Last Judge of Justice.”

Adam made his way back to the couch.

“Dude, you got a way cooler power title than me!” Alex said when Adam sat back down. “‘The First and Last Judge of Justice.’ That sounds cool as hell!”

“Did any of you guys smell or hear things while in the chair?” Adam asked.

May and Alex shook their heads.

“I smelt wood and gunpowder, and heard the sound of a judge’s gavel.”

“How do you know what a judge’s gavel sounds like?” Alex asked. “That’s an oddly specific sound you know of.”

“I don’t know what it sounds like, it was like an instinct, like I knew the sound already, even if I never heard one.”

“I’m guessing that’s how you knew what gunpowder smelled like.”

“Nope, I used to watch my dad in the backyard shoot at targets for fun. I even joined him one time, although I’m not sure of the legalities of that.”

After more people went up, the robed man spoke again.

“You will now all be getting your gear. Your gear will be the deciding factor on how powerful of Trainers you’ll actually be. For example, you could get a power title like ‘The Guy Who Got Peed On,’ but could get a rocket launcher. We will call random people up to receive their gear.”

The robed man called a name, and a person stepped up. They sat in the chair, and soon afterwards, gear just appeared on them. The gear in question was a blue and black rifle, cool looking blue armor, and a massive blue lined sword on his back. He got up looking quite satisfied with the gear that appeared and went back to his couch.

People went up, got their gear, and went back down. This went on for a few hours.

“May without a last name!” The robed man said.

When May sat in the seat, she received a pink hoodie and a green staff.”

“Well this is lame!” May complained as she sat back down on the couch. “All these other people are getting suits of armor, cool weapons, and other stuff! Meanwhile all I got is this pink hoodie, which is quite comfy by the way, and some green staff thing!”

“Maybe the staff heals people?” Alex suggested.

“Wow, great observation Sherlock.” May sarcastically said.

“Alex Williams!” The robed man said.

“Oh neat, right after you!” Alex said as he made his way up there.

Alex received a water gun made of gold, and a suit of gold plated armor.

“Ok, the armor is cool, but A WATER GUN?!” Alex complained as he sat back down. “Dude, out of anything I could’ve gotten, a water gun was not what I thought I would get.”

“Maybe it’s like really fast water?” Adam suggested. “You know, the ones they use to cut things with?”

“If that’s the case, I would like to retract my previous statement.”

A few more people went up, and then Adam was called. Adam sat down in the chair, and a few seconds later, he received two revolvers at his hips, retractable blades on the forearms, and a funny looking cowboy hat.

“The hell does this have to do with judging?” Adam said when he sat down. “From those sounds and other stuff, I would’ve thought I’d get a gavel or something. Maybe even a grim reaper scythe since some associate that with judgement or justice. But me becoming a cowboy was something I didn't expect.”

“Everyone else got big ass weapons, and all you got were two tiny revolvers?” Alex said. “I’m not counting those blades on your arms since those are also tiny.”

“Hey, revolvers are totally powerful and stuff, maybe I will become an intergalactic cowboy!”

“That cowboy hat looks lame. Not trying to be mean here or anything, but it looks like one of those hats you’d get at a kids store.”

“Yea, it does.” May piped in.

Adam knocked on the cowboy hat to see if it at least had some special property to it. Nothing happened other than it being slightly bent inwards afterwards.

After the ceremony ended, May and Adam went back to their dorms, where Adam decided he wouldn’t wear around the cowboy hat.

“We got the lamest ones.” Adam thought aloud. “I didn’t even get a cool armor set, just some cowboy hat that doesn’t even look real! Heck, my power title doesn’t really match up with my gear. At least with your’s, May, the green staff looks healing related. What do revolvers, blades, and a cowboy hat have to do with judges and justice?”

Adam pondered that for a while until he realized that the ceremony was so long, it was already 22:24. He put away the newly received gear and said his goodnights to his dorm mate before going to sleep, slightly disappointed in his new gear.
