As the evening hours continued – Harper and Jo fell fast asleep in their tents. Jester was still out and about with his fellow frogs unaware of the impending threat of the Sydney funnel web spider. Jester ate more crickets here and there and began to croak with his fellow frogs.
“Ribit” said one frog near Jester.
Jester feeling the mood decided to croak even louder hoping to attract his would-be mate. The frog, a female frog admired Jester’s croak. She began to slowly hop towards him, unaware of the funnel spider was nearby. The female frog continued to hop, ever so closer.
“Croak!” bellowed Jester as he made another loud one.
But as the female frog hopped closer – she fell into what seemed like a trap for frogs! This caused some distress for Jester as he began to search the area for her. He was unaware that the female frog had been taken by the Sydney funnel web spider’s trap! She was desperately trying to free herself from the web, but the funnel spider managed to use its fangs to stab her paralyzing her. The funnel web spider then detected Jester nearby.
“Croak!” bellowed Jester.
Jester was hoping to attract the same female frog, but he was unaware of her demise. The funnel web spider soon emerged much to Jester’s horror. Jester managed to flee right in the split second the funnel web spider tried to get its second frog meal. The funnel web spider gazed at Jester feeling frustrated, it only had one frog to dine upon.

“Croak” said Jester.
Jester was almost mocking the funnel web spider for failing to apprehend him. But there were other dangers lurking in the darkness – a few Southern Boobook owls were perched on a branch hovering over the tents where Harper and Jo slept.
“Hoot, hoot!” cried one of the owls.
The owls were scanning around for food, the frogs would do for the moment.
“Hoot, hoot!” cried another owl as it began to swoop right down.
SWOOSH, Jester just missed the owl by just a few inches. The owl instead snagged a small mouse that was out trying to search for food. Jester felt relieved that there were other evening animals being willing barriers. He would have to endure the evening for a little longer. The humans in their tents still slept through the entire ordeal. Harper was dreaming about himself flying over the area.
“Come on Jester” said Harper in his sleep, “I will help you.”
Though Harper couldn’t really do this in reality, he could try to do it in his dreams. It was always the same of Jester getting eaten by some predator. It didn’t seem to matter what type of animal it was. Jester didn’t realize that there was a human that actually cared for its safety, despite his own reservations into not meddling into nature’s affairs.
“Croak” said Jester.
Jester again tried to attract another female frog, hoping he’d have better luck away from the Sydney funnel web spider. Soon he noticed another female frog had responded to his calls, and she was hopping towards him.
“Ribit” said the second female frog.
Jester was pleased he was finally going to get his mate this evening. But we all know that couldn’t be possible for Jester’s own luck. Yes, poor Jester would soon have to meet another tragedy in losing another female frog.
