Chapter 9: Jeff Heads Home

Jeff was pleased to have his frogs with him; he had placed Jester and the two other frogs in a container and had placed a container in a bag. He knew his father – Erik was oddly friends with Jo Thompson through knowing his aunt – Hailey. He knew his father would disapprove of taking in wild animals as pets.

“Dad won’t understand me” said Jeff as he glared into the bag as if he were speaking to the three frogs.

Jester didn’t understand a word Jeff was saying, he just knew he wasn’t going to be ever in a pond ever again. One of the frogs that was next to Jester was a rival male frog trying to fight over the female frog still in the container. The lone female frog sat back and watched the two males fight. Jeff gazed at the two frogs fighting, he laughed at how amazing they were.

“I better get you three home, probably put you in separate tanks,” said Jeff.

Jeff continued to stroll down the street, one of the neighbors from one of the other homes – Phoebe Smith an elderly woman spotted Jeff.

“What are you caring in that bag you youngster?” asked Phoebe.

“Promise not to tell my dad,” said Jeff.

Phoebe knew that Jeff was one of the nicer teens, she could understand how much of a responsibility it is to take care of pets even if they were wild animals.

“I won’t tell him a sole” said Phoebe, “let me guess what they are. Hmm, are they amphibious?”

“Yes, they’re frogs” said Jeff, “my friends and I got them in the local pond. We had to shoo away some crocodiles who were guarding them.”

Phoebe was shocked that they encountered crocodiles, though she was pleased they were able to catch the frogs.

“Well, have fun with your frogs I won’t tell your father a thing,” said Phoebe.

Jeff soon headed back to his apartment where his father Erik was watching television. He was too busy to see Jeff entering the living room.

“What’s that you got there in your bag?” asked Erik.

  “Uh, school project,” said Jeff.

Erik knew something was off with his son.

“What kind of a school project?” asked Erik.

  “Babysitting frogs” replied Jeff.

“Really, let’s see these frogs,” said Erik.

Jeff sighed, as he placed the bag on the table, he then unsealed the bag showing the three frogs. Jester glared at the strange man in front of him.

“Those frogs don’t seem like school projects,” said Erik.

  “But they are,” said Jeff.

“Then you wouldn’t mind if I called up your teacher just to confer this,” said Erik.

Jeff sighed he knew the gig was going to be up sooner or later. He would have to find a hiding place. He took the container with the three frogs and headed towards his room. He knew of a secret compartment just underneath his bed where he could put the frogs. Jester and the other two frogs were hungry, lucky Jeff also collected various insects.

“I bet you three are hungry,” said Jeff.

Jeff soon headed towards his cabinet and soon opened up a container. He then poured a few crickets into the container with the frogs.

  “Eat up,” said Jeff.

Jester wasn’t use to eating like this, he was use to catching the crickets himself. He would sadly have to live like this for a while. Perhaps those two human naturalists would come around sooner rather than later.
