Chapter 2

  Aric gripped Calyse’s wrist.

“Calyse, you misunderstood. I don’t need her money!”

The woman in the red dress pulled her hand away.

  “But I do!”

“Don’t be a hypocrite! When else could you earn two hundred thousand dolrs a month?”

Calyse’s unwavering attitude completely shattered Aric’s heart, as if their marriage had been nothing but a game to her.

Ignoring Aric’s disapproval, Calyse walked past him.

“Miss Reid, I hope you’re satisfied with the man I chose.”

“I think he’s handsome enough and suitable to be your contract husband.”

Victoria, who was leaning against the sofa, responded indifferently.

  “Yes, I’m interested in him.”

“But I think you’re trying to fool me by sending a married man to me.”

Calyse shook her head and expined, “You don’t need to worry. I’ve already prepared the divorce papers for him.”

Victoria’s hands clenched tightly. But she only sneered.

“You really are an opportunistic woman, Mrs. Fostr.”

Calyse smiled gracefully."You can call me whatever you like, as long as you keep your promise."

Victoria’s gaze shifted to Aric who looked tense.

“I never go back on my word. But what if he refuses to become my contract husband?”

The blonde woman shot Calyse a sharp look.

“You’re really wasting my time by bringing me the wrong man!”

“My time is very limited, and tonight I must go home with my man.”

Calyse assured “Don’t worry, I’ll handle this.”

She quickly chased after Aric who was about to walk out the room and grabbed his arm.

  “Stop!”

The brunette woman blocked Aric’s way, then handed him the divorce documents.

  “Sign this, and we’re done.”

Aric stared closely at the face of the woman he had married two years ago. He tried to find a trace of reluctance on her face.

With a calm but pressing tone, Aric replied, “Are you sure you won’t regret this?”

Calyse looked up, meeting Aric’s eyes without a hint of remorse.

“Aric, you think too highly of yourself.”

She smiled arrogantly. “I have no reason to regret this.”

“Just sign it. I’m sure you’ll thank me ter.”

“Don’t say I never appreciated our time together. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have made such a proper goodbye.”

Aric felt sick to his stomach from Calyse’s nonsense.

He couldn’t understand why the woman he had trusted to be his lifelong partner had changed so drastically after climbing the dder of success.

Without hesitation, Aric signed the divorce papers.

“If you think divorce is best, fine, we’ll divorce!”

“But don’t think I’d ever agree to become anyone’s contract husband for such a measly amount of money!”

The woman in the red dress snatched the divorce papers roughly. But still, she didn’t step aside for Aric.

  “Aric, what are you thinking?”

“Don’t you appreciate my kindness? Who do you think you are?"

Aric responded sharply, “Keep your kindness to yourself.”

“You don’t even realize who I am even after we’ve been together for two years.”

He pushed past Calyse and left the room without gncing back.

  Victoria stood up spontaneously. “Stop!”

But Aric didn’t listen to her and kept walking down the corridor.

At the same time the blonde woman in the bck dress sighed in frustration.

‘Damn it, so he rejected me because the sary I offered him was too low?’

‘No! I don’t have time for drama!’

‘I have to get him and bring him to my parents tonight!’

Without thinking, Victoria lunged past Calyse to renegotiate with Aric.

  “Ouch!” Calyse fell.

But Victoria had no time to care about Calyse. Instead, she kept running after Aric because getting a contract husband with the qualifications she wanted wasn’t easy.

As Aric was about to enter the elevator, the sharp sound of heels striking marble echoed through the corridor.

  “Wait, stop!”

Aric stepped into the empty elevator and just before the elevator doors closed, Victoria slipped inside.

Aric looked indifferently at Victoria who was gasping for breath.

Once she calmed down, Victoria straightened her posture and spoke with a graceful smile, “Aric, I know the sary I offered didn’t satisfy you.”

Aric’s expression didn’t change. For Aric, this was actually not about sary.

Victoria continued her words, “I can increase the sary, but at least come with me tonight to meet my parents.”

“If you can convince them, I wouldn’t mind raising your pay.”

Victoria’s eyes scanned Aric from head to toe. But Aric still didn’t respond, as if she were talking to a wall.

Victoria’s patience was running thin, and she grew increasingly anxious when she looked at her watch which showed eight o’clock.

She couldn’t imagine what would happen if she failed to bring a man before her parents. She would have to go through with an arranged marriage to a man she had never wanted in her life.

After thinking for a moment, suddenly Victoria pressed the emergency button on the elevator.

The elevator suddenly stop, making their bodies sway slightly and Victoria nearly crashed into Aric’s chest.

The main lights went out for a split second, repced by a dim yellow glow from the emergency lights that cast sharp, vague shadows on their faces.

Aric finally shot her a sharp gnce. “What the hell are you doing?!”
