CHAPTER 14: The Echoes Of War

The Nebu-9 floated in the darkness, its hull humming softly as it maintained orbit around the forgotten pnet. Inside, the crew was in a state of uneasy silence, each member processing the harrowing experience they had just endured. The images of skeletal beings, their haunting eyes, and the cryptic warnings of "The Forgotten" lingered in their minds, leaving behind a heavy weight that none could shake.

Commander Elias Vance stood at the helm, his eyes fixed on the stars outside the observation window. The enormity of their situation was starting to settle in. They had ventured into The Unknown, but now, it felt as if The Unknown had found them. The approaching vessel was something far more dangerous than they had anticipated. He could feel it—feel the gravity of what y ahead. Whatever was coming was not a casual exploration. It was something darker, something intent on confronting them.

He rubbed his temples and exhaled slowly. His mind raced with the warnings of "The Forgotten." Oblivion. The Gate. The betrayal. What had they uncovered? What were they walking into?

"Commander, we need to talk," Aria Soce’s voice broke through his thoughts. She stepped into the control room, her face grim. Behind her stood Kieran, Lucas, and Amara, each wearing a look of deep concern.

"Yeah," Elias muttered. "I was just thinking the same thing. It’s getting too quiet."

Aria raised an eyebrow. "The quiet before the storm?"

"Something like that," Elias replied. "We’ve crossed a line. The moment we stepped on that pnet, we didn’t just discover something ancient; we triggered something. Something that’s coming for us."

Amara cleared her throat, her voice barely above a whisper. "The Entity… it said we weren’t too te, but THE VEIL is thin. What does that mean, Elias?"

Elias turned toward her, locking eyes. "I’m not sure. But it feels like we’ve opened a door. And whatever was behind it is on its way. We need to prepare for what’s coming."

Nova’s voice echoed from the comms system, cutting through the tension. "Commander, I’m detecting an enormous energy signature. THE VESSEL is nearing. I’m also picking up gravitational anomalies—likely caused by the vessel’s massive mass."

"How much time do we have?" Elias asked, his voice low.

"Approximately 15 minutes," Nova replied. "It’s moving fast. It’s also emitting strange pulses—faint, but consistent. The patterns seem... deliberate."

Elias exchanged a gnce with Aria. "Deliberate? What does that mean?"

"It means They’re communicating," Kieran said, stepping forward. "Whatever this VESSEL is, it’s not acting like a random object. It’s sending a signal. Maybe trying to make contact. Or preparing for something."

"Or preparing for war," Lucas muttered, his hands still on the console.

Amara was already scanning the data, her brow furrowed. "The patterns... they’re simir to the ones we saw in the ruins. The echoes. It’s like they’re connected."

"Then we’re dealing with something that’s been waiting for us," Elias said, running a hand through his hair. "We need to be ready. Whatever this ship is, IT knows we’re here. IT knows we’ve found the echoes."

There was a pause, and then Kieran spoke up again, his voice a mix of awe and caution. "Commander, I don’t know how to expin it, but the data... it’s almost as if this ship is moving through time as much as it’s moving through space. I’ve never seen anything like it."

Elias turned toward Kieran, his heart skipping a beat. "Time? You mean it’s... maniputing time?"

"It could be," Kieran replied. "There’s a subtle distortion in the fabric of space-time around it. I’m still trying to figure out the exact mechanics, but it’s there. If that thing can manipute time, then... we’re dealing with something far beyond anything we’ve encountered."

Elias’s mind raced, the implications of Kieran’s words sinking in. They were no longer just facing an unknown alien race or ship. If this VESSEL could alter time itself, then the very ws of the universe were at stake. If they weren’t careful, they might find themselves caught in a time loop, or worse, erased from existence entirely.

"We need to know more," Amara said, her voice firm despite the tension in the room. "If this vessel is connected to the echoes, it might hold the answers we need. If we understand it, maybe we can figure out what the Forgotten meant. Maybe we can stop this."

Elias looked at her, then nodded slowly. "Alright. Sienna, prepare to go to red alert. We’ll need the entire crew on standby. If this ship means us harm, we’ll need to be ready for anything."

Sienna’s voice crackled through the comms. "Understood, Commander. All systems are being prepped for defensive protocols. Everyone is on alert."

"We’ll meet at the hangar," Elias ordered. "Get ready for anything. Kieran, I want you and Amara to go over the data. Figure out everything you can about this Vessel—its energy signatures, its trajectory, anything that can help us understand what we’re dealing with."

Kieran nodded. "We’ll get on it right away."

Elias turned, looking ahead at the holo-screen dispying THE VESSEL getting closer. "Everyone stay sharp. This is only the beginning."

The bridge fell silent as the crew prepared for the unknown.

  THE FINAL APPROACH

The Nebu-9 creaked as it drifted through space, approaching the source of the energy signature. The massive VESSEL was drawing closer now, its form becoming clearer against the backdrop of stars. At first gnce, it was a haunting sight—dark, angur, and massive, with jagged edges that seemed to pierce THE VOID itself. The ship was like nothing they had ever seen, a twisted amalgamation of technology and organic matter.

"Commander, we are in range," Sienna reported. "The ship is coming into visual range now."

Elias stood from his seat, walking toward the observation window. The massive VESSEL loomed before them, its presence almost suffocating. IT radiated a sense of foreboding, like a predator stalking its prey. The ship’s surface shimmered with energy pulses, casting an eerie glow across the dark expanse of space. As it drew closer, Elias could see what looked like deep grooves or scars along its hull—strange patterns that seemed to writhe as if alive.

"Is it preparing for battle?" Aria asked, her voice tense.

"Hard to say," Elias replied, his eyes never leaving the ship. "But something about it feels... wrong. It’s almost as if it’s aware of us. Watching us."

Nova’s voice interrupted his thoughts. "Commander, the ship is emitting a high-frequency signal. It’s not hostile, at least not yet. It’s more like... a request. A demand, maybe."

"A demand?" Elias repeated, his brow furrowing.

"Yes," Nova confirmed. "The signal is encoded. I’m attempting to decode it now. It appears to be a form of communication. But it’s quite tricky, this is a unique code, one of it kind."

Elias gritted his teeth. "Can you send a response?"

"I’ll try," Nova replied, her tone filled with uncertainty. "But there’s no guarantee it will understand."

Elias thought for a moment, then gave the order. "Send a neutral signal. Let it know we’re here to communicate, not to fight."

As Nova initiated the transmission, the entire ship seemed to hold its breath. Time seemed to stretch, the seconds dragging on like hours. The dark ship loomed ever closer, its vast bulk swallowing the stars.

Then, a deep, resonant hum echoed across the Nebu-9. The signal had been received.

  THE MESSAGE

The crew gathered around the communication panel, watching as Nova’s systems processed the incoming response. The dispy flickered, and then, in a deep, guttural voice that reverberated through their bones, a message came through.

  "YOU HAVE AWAKENED US."

The words were not a question but a statement, one filled with ancient power. The crew exchanged gnces, a mix of confusion and fear settling over them.

Elias stood tall, his voice steady as he spoke into the comms. "We are here to understand. We mean no harm."

  The response was almost immediate.

"THE ECHOES HAVE BECOME YOU. YOU CARRY THE MARK."

The words echoed in Elias’s mind, the weight of their meaning heavy. The echoes… The Forgotten… The Gate.

"What does It want from us?" Kieran asked, his voice a whisper.

Elias had no answer. Only one thing was clear—they had been drawn into something far greater than they could have ever imagined.
