After I came to this world and took on the body of a Devil, I realized that the amount of sleep I needed to function had greatly decreased.
From my old memories of this world, when I was a Low-Class Devil, I only needed about 6 hours of sleep per night to rest completely, which was the same amount that a healthy human needed.
But when I became a Middle-Class Devil, that need decreased to only 4 hours a day.
So during the rest of the time I was in my room, I just studied the common language of this world or trained my magic.
Since I had already trained a lot in [Creativity Magic], that night I took the opportunity to train in [Devil Blades], and I have to say, the versatility of this skill is very high, especially with the power of a Middle-Class Devil to sustain it.
Without realizing it, the sun rose, and I remained focused on training this skill.
It was only when Varen woke up and joined me for morning training that I realized how much time had passed.
After the short training session he did after waking up, we left the room and found Gwen sitting alone at a table in the corner of the inn's hall eating a piece of bread.
When her eyes met mine, a huge smile appeared on her face.
“Good morning, master!” she said excitedly.
“Good morning, Gwen. How was your night?” I asked curiously.
Her smile froze for a split second before returning to normal. “I didn't have the best dreams I could have had, but waking up with my body like this cheered me up instantly!”
After eating breakfast at the inn, we went to the Adventurers' Guild to register Gwen.
She would have a clean record as an E-Rank adventurer with 0 missions, needing to complete 5 more D-Rank missions to move up to a D-Rank adventurer, unlike me and Varen, who only needed one more mission to move up in rank.
During our last few days in town, we controlled ourselves a lot to complete the missions, not wanting to draw too much attention.
Even though it was normal for powerful people to join the Guild after already being powerful, rising in rank quickly, even that drew attention, since it wasn't that common, so we just took it slow, earning enough money to live well, but not enough to have luxuries.
Those almost 4 silver coins we earned on our first day in town helped our finances a lot, as our daily income dropped to around 30 to 70 copper coins a day over the next few days.
When we needed more money, we would complete a D Rank mission, but the rest of the time we just stuck to E Rank missions so we wouldn't end the day in the red.
This meant that the total amount of money I had saved was still only between 4 and 5 silver coins.
But now with another mouth to feed and another room to pay for at the inn, we needed to increase our income.
So we started the day with a D-rank mission to hunt some boars that were tormenting a farm near the city.
This was the most classic mission for RPG newbies in my other world, so I felt that something like this would be ideal for Gwen's first mission.
Looking at the new bracelet on her arm with a big proud smile, Gwen was excited for the first adventure she would have.
We just stopped at an armor shop to buy some leather armor to protect Gwen, not bothering to buy weapons, since I gave my sword to Gwen to use as a last resort, while I could rely on my superior strength or Gwen's power to make a sword for me.
If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
As we walked, I asked curiously. “Gwen, with your current Mana, how many blades can you make?”
Gwen thought for a moment with her eyes closed, as if trying to feel it. “I think if I try to make a dagger like the ones I used yesterday in battle, daggers that don't last long but are powerful, I would have enough Mana to make a few dozen of them.”
I nodded, satisfied with that.
By my estimates, following her example, I could already make over a hundred daggers like the ones she used yesterday, but if I tried to improve the durability or sharpness of these daggers, the Mana consumed would increase and the number I could make would decrease.
The journey to the farm that issued the mission took two hours, and although we could use our wings to fly there in much less time, we took advantage of this time to let Gwen familiarize herself with her powers against all the monsters that appeared, just as I had trained with Varen in the early days.
The first battle she faced was against a gray wolf corrupted by Mana.
When he saw us, his eyes glowed, baring his fangs and growling low.
“Gwen, it's up to you,” I said, crossing my arms. “Try to use only two daggers in this battle.”
Gwen swallowed hard, looking at the wolf a little nervously as she spoke to cheer herself up. “Okay, I can do it.”
She held out her hands, and two spectral daggers flashed, flickering like living shadows.
The wolf didn't wait for anything and charged forward, kicking up dirt with its paws.
Varen leaned against a tree and strummed his lute calmly, as if providing the soundtrack to this battle. “Don't become lunch, redhead! Cut that wolf down before it bites you!”
He smiled, but used [Devil Whisper] with a whistle harmonized with the music when he saw that Gwen was still scared, causing the wolf to hesitate and look around in confusion.
With the sound of Varen's whistle, Gwen used telekinesis on the daggers a little clumsily.
One dagger cut the wolf's flank, drawing a trickle of blood, but the other disappeared into thin air.
Her skill is slightly worse now than when she was using these powers unconsciously in our battle in the pit.
The wolf spun around, growling, and charged at her.
“Damn it!”
She screamed, backing away, almost tripping over a root.
Seeing that she was starting to panic, I spoke in a firm voice. “Gwen, calm down!” My voice cut through the clearing. “You're throwing mana around like it's a bomb... Feel it, like in the pit, you just need to direct it, not push it, focus on where you want to hit him!”
She took a deep breath, her red eyes shining. “Okay, I... I feel it!”
The daggers returned, more solid and sharp, cutting through the air with a buzzing sound.
The wolf jumped, but Gwen spun around, one dagger sticking into its paw, the other grazing its shoulder.
This caused blood to spatter on the grass and the animal howled, limping away.
Varen laughed, strumming quickly. “Look at that, the redhead is turning into a hunter! Cut more, or he'll get you!”
Seeing the confidence growing in her and the speed she was learning, I was pleased. “Gwen, now! Pin him!”
I shouted in a firm voice to reassure her.
Gwen gritted her teeth as sweat dripped from her forehead.
Then both daggers flew, one sticking in the hind leg and the other in the shoulder.
The one in the shoulder was more lethal, but the one in the leg helped immobilize the animal, causing the wolf to fall, growling weakly, pinned to the ground.
She stood still, panting, the daggers trembling before disappearing. “I... did that?”
“You did that just fine,” I said, taking a step forward. “But now you need to finish it off... our power grows based on the battles you fight, but we've discovered that when you kill your opponent, your stat gains are maximized.”
Gwen nodded and looked at the wolf.
The creature was completely irrational.
If it were a normal wolf, even I would feel sorry for it, since I liked dogs in the other world, but this wolf had been corrupted by Mana, and with a body that wasn't prone to that kind of power, the Mana had corroded its mind.
Now this wolf was just a killing machine, nothing worth saving.
So Gwen made one last dagger and stabbed it into the animal's brain.
Varen finished the song he was playing and commented with a smile. “Not bad, redhead... seriously, you're getting good.”
Gwen wiped the sweat from her brow, a shy smile on her face, but not at all affected by killing the wolf. “Thanks, Varen. And Master... how did you know I could handle that wolf on my own?”
“Because you're stronger than you think,” I replied with a proud smile. “And if you did that to a wolf, the boars won't stand a chance.”
After that confrontation, every time a new animal appeared in the forest, we let Gwen deal with it.
When she had a problem or difficulty, we let her feel the weight of it before intervening and helping her deal with the animals on her own.
Her learning speed was very high, with each new battle she improved her control over her skill more and more, to the point that when we arrived at the farm after three hours, an hour longer than expected because of the time we stopped to train Gwen, she was already able to control the two daggers with ease, even practicing adding another dagger to the ones she used in combat.
