A nun raises her hand and points at the board. With desperation in her eyes and a flustered voice as she tries to get the children's attention.
Sister Ashley: Children, please focus!
We don't have much time before the exam! Don't you all want to get a high grade?
The children continue to chatter as another nun opens the door, telling the children that the class is over. The children then ran out of the class chattering. Sister Ashley, in disbelief, leaves the class. As she begins to wonder the halls, she realizes that one of the churches children didn't attend the class. She walks to the end of the hall and peaks outside the window.
Sister Ashley: (I wonder how long he's been sitting there?)
The nun makes her way to the boy who's sits by the tree with a stack of books on top of a piece of cloth. She tries to speak to the boy. However, the boy doesn't hear. She walks closer and tires again.
Sister Ashley: Mimir! Can you hear me!?
The boy turns with a sharp look at the nun with a face of shock.
Mimir: Sister, I'm sorry I didn't notice you there. Is there anything you need from me?
Sister Ashley: No. Well, could you tell me what you're reading about?
Mimir: I'm reading volume 3 of Runes Of Revelation by Johnny Black.
Sister Ashley: Runes of Revelation? So, it's an educational book about magic? I'm guessing.
Mimir: Yeah! Well, kinda. Runes of Revelation is a series about Johnny Black doing research about the study of Runes and how he theories about that if combined with chant magic, it can become far more conductive. However, it's only theoretical as far as I read. That man is truly a genius, and I wish I could find more of his books, but I could only find 3 volumes. I read them all over 7 times, and other books don't come close to the creativity of Black.
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
Sister Ashley: Well, that seems cool and all, but isn't weird that a researcher is interested in something so basic as Runes?
I mean, what's the point of writing down a spell when chanting basically does the same thing, but faster?
Mimir: Chanting maybe fast, but it takes the user own magic instead of nature's.
Sister Ashley: But nature magic is weak, and it takes forever to draw a magic circle and write all of those symbols. I think this guy is just board, if not crazy. Only little kids or grandma use nature to do basic stuff like lightning a candle or to slowly boil a pot of water.
The boy looks away in shame and remains silent.
Sister Ashley: (Ah Shit... I didn't mean), but hey! Now that I think about it, runes do make things way more convenient!
The door opened, and an old man walked through and greeted the nun.
Father Bob: Good afternoon, sister.
What are you all discussing if you don't mind me asking?
Sister Ashley: Oh, uh, we were just discussing some literature.
Father Bob: Ah, wonderful! Knowledge is key to a bright future. For many important historical figures, they were geniuses in their own way. Some by fighting, some by killing, some by farming, some by sharing, some by negotiating. They're many way these people have benefited our small kingdom. Though speaking of the future. Mimir, are you planning on taking the Trials of Artemis.
Mimir: Uh, yes, of course! I've plan to become a disciple of Artemis.
Father Bob: Oh, a disciple of Artemis you say. Out of curiosity, why did you want to become a disciple, if you don't mind me asking?
Mimir stayed silent, looking down at the ground trying to find the best way to respond.
Father Bob: .....
Mimir, I almost forgot about your coming of age ceremony! Tomorrow is your big day to receive your blessing by the sister of fate. Whatever your blessing is, I'm sure it will be great.
Mimir: I hope so too Father Bob.
The father knelt down and put his hand on the boy shoulder.
Father Bob: Have fath in the Sister boy. They'll give you only what you need.
Mimir: Of course Father. Father it getting late so I'm heading to bed.
Father Bob: Of course! You have a big day tomorrow! Rest up now!
The boy gathered his books and went inside. The father than looked at the Sister with an expression of contemplation.
Father Bob: Sister, do you know why would Mimir want to pass the Trials of Artemis?
Sister Ashley: No, but if I had to make a guess... It would be to explore the forest. I mean the kid has always been curious about everything.
Father Bob: Sister, how do you see Mimir.
Sister Ashley: I see him as another kid in the orphanage Father.
Father Bob: Do you see him as someone that's apart of the Church.
Sister Ashley: Um Father, what are you saying?
Father Bob: Forgive me for all of these questions, but I fear that the boy doesn't feel as if he belongs.
Sister Ashley: Well what did you expect Father. He's only been with us for 2 years. Most of the kids here aren't even 10.
Father Bob: What about Aren or Meranda? I surely seen them played together a few times.
Sister Ashley: Maybe, but Mimir never took the initiative.
Father Bob: As much as I admire the boy intelligence, I fear that the very same will be his down fall.
