Curiosity

"As a sun sets a new rises and that which makes a new day, but does one who is restless through the night considers it a new day" - Johnny Black

As the sound of beating pots and pans and voices in the distance, Mimir woke up in a small room. It's a 1 by 1 room, about 25 feet in area. The bed alone nearly takes half the room and a desk nearly takes half the bed. Both of the walls are molded into shelves that are filled with books and notes. Mimir gets dressed and heads down the hall. The dining hall is filled with children and nuns. Mimir, staring at the breakfast, turns away when realizing it's oatmeal. He steps out of the church and Father Bob, sitting in a rocking chair greets him.

Father Bob: Mimir! What a pleasant surprise, are you heading towards the library today?

Mimir: I am father, I need to return the books before noon.

Father Bob: Ah, of course. Mimir, did you tell anyone else about your day of awakening?

Mimir: No. I haven't told anyone Father.

Father Bob: I see. Mimir, would you mind if I accompany you to the sacred church?

Mimir: If you want to Father I wouldn't mind.

Father Bob: That's wonderful to hear. I will see you at dawn.

  Mimir: Of course Father.

Mimir walking through the kingdom sees all kinds of wonders. Churches, Black Smiths, Temples, Huts, and so on. The Kingdom of Prosperity, as the name implies, it's a land that is built on fairness and equality. While nobility exists in the Kingdom, so do the responsibility and restrictions. Despite being a Kingdom there is no king, but rather a system of groups of speakers and districts. With this method, each village no matter how big or small, their voices can be heard. Thus supposedly making the main reason the kingdom prosper. Mimir has lived in the Kingdom his whole life and has believed he's seen all. He spends his days in two places, the library and Mrs.Gordon's Shop. Currently he's at the library, speaking to the librarian about the books he's going to return.

Ela: These are all the books correct.

  Mimir: Um yes Ms.

Ela: That's wonderful to hear. Say have you read the new books published by professor Marks? I heard they're very good educational books about mana control and the books go in great detail of how it feels apparently. Some have described it as if they can feel the magic flowing through them.

Mimir: That sounds fascinating, but I don't think that book will work for me.

Ela: Well maybe that will change today, after all today is your coming of age day, no?.... Oops.

With a blank expression Mimir stared at Ela.

Mimir: So the Father told you?

Ela: Forgive me Mimir, I forgot your birthday and when I asked the father he said it was a week and when I asked him how old you are and he said 13, so I kinda put two and two together...

Mimir: Mrs. Timber, it's fine. I don't mind if you showed up but you don't have to if you don't want to. It's really not a big deal.

Ela: Of course it's a big deal! It's a once in a lifetime event in a person's life. Who knows what might happen. I just can't wait to see what you get.

  Stolen story; please report.

Mimir: Well, I appreciate that. Oh! It seems to be mid-day. I need to stop by Mrs. Gordon's Shop. I'll see you later.

  Ela: Ok! Take care Mimir!

  Mimir: Bye!

Mimir with a tired expression walks across town. Mimir, while walking, ponders "I wonder who else is going to show up. I really hope that besides the Father and Ms. Timbers, no one else shows up. I really don't want to get their hopes up.". Mimir stands before a house, it's somewhat old and run down. Vines can be seen at the sides and bushes that are unmaintained. At the top of the house there's a crooked sign painted "Mrs. Gordon's Shop". Mimir enters the shop and sees jars filled with herbs and spices. Large pots of plants are being grown in the shop. The inside of the shop is dim and dusty. A lady, around her late 30ths is seen grinding herbs. She turns and with a stern voice says. "Mimr! There you are! I've been waiting for you since morning. Grab those herbs and start grinding." Mimir grabs the herbs and a book, he sits by the mortar and pestle. He flips to the medicinal section and begins to follow the instructions. They sit together in silence for the next 5 hours. Mrs.Gordon turns to look at Mimir. With a voice of curiosity and Concern she speaks to Mimir.

Mary: So, how old are you today?

Mimir: Huh, oh, I'm turning 13 today.

Mary: 13 all ready. My, how fast the years have gone by. I can still remember when you were so little. Even then you always help me with this. Hehehe, I loved seeing you use the stool just to reach the second shelf. You almost fell many times and when you did you cried like a baby. To think today you'll receive your blessing. Tell me something, what do you plan on doing?

  Mimir: Plan for what.

Mary: Don't play dumb boy, I've seen you speaking with that black smith, what's his name?

Mr.Timber. I saw you buy a small dagger with an abnormally long handle. I thought to myself, "Why on earth would this kid need that kind of weapon" and quite frankly I still don't know. Then I thought I might as well just ask you, so what do you plan on doing?

Mimir was shocked and pondered on the answer. He's trying to find a way to change the subject, but realized that it would be useless. Mimir stood tall with fear and ambition in his eyes. He Spoke with nothing, but pure passion.

Mimir: I want to take the Trials of Artemis. I want to see the world outside of this Kingdom. I know that the forest is cursed with monsters beyond my own imagination and I may be young, but I'm tired of this place. I don't feel like there is anything else for me here to see. I need to know what lies beyond the kingdom. What was our kind like before the foundation of the Kingdom? How did we live for so long outside of these walls? What else is out there?

With her back turned to Mimir and with a serious tone, she stopped to grind herbs.

Mary: Does anyone at the church know about this?

  Mimir: No.

  Mary: Not even the Father?

  Mimir: No.

Mary: Does even the wife of the blacksmith know? You know, the librarian?

  Mimir: No.

Mary: Have you even graduated from school?

  Mimir: No.

Mary: What about your friends, you know, those two?

  Mimir: No.

Mary: Does anyone know EXCEPT ME!

  Mimir: No

Mary sat in disbelief and shock. She couldn't believe the stupidity she was hearing. A 13 year old boy that wants to explore the world filled with things that want to kill him just because he's bored. She just couldn't comprehend it. The one place that everyone wants to stay away from is the one thing the boy wants to go? As if she was watching a child walking into a pit of fire for the sake of Joy. She tried to stand, but then immediately sat.

  Mimir: Mrs.Gordon are you ok?

Mary: Mimir... What kind of discipline are you trying to become? Wait... Don't tell me you're trying to become a Hunter!?

  Mimir: Yes...

Mary: Boy! I heard many foolish dreams in my life but this is easily the stupidest thing I've ever heard! Is the unknown that interesting to you? Even if it means you're risking certain death!?

HOW CAN SOMEONE AS SMART AS YOU BE SO STUPID!? ARE YOU WILLING TO RISK YOUR LIFE FOR SOME HISTORY! DO YOU NOT REMEMBER HOW MY SON DIED!? DID YOU LEARNED NOTHING FROM HIS DEATH!?

Mimir: I HAVE!... I learned many things from him. He was a dear friend to me. I may only know him for a brief time but still. I admire him! He risked his life to follow his dreams and I want to do the same! I need to know what lies beyond the walls! I just need to!

Mary: YOU DON'T NEED TO DO ANYTHING, BUT BE GRATEFUL THAT YOU'RE STILL ALIVE! HOW COULD YOU THINK ABOUT WASTING YOUR LIFE AFTER YOUR FATHER LAID DOWN HIS OWN FOR YOU!

The air filled with silence. She sat back down on the chair and realized what she said. Mimir was trying to think on what to say. Mary decided to compose herself and wanted to apologize. However Mimir with an unapologetic tone spoke and apologized.

Mimir: Mary, I'm sorry, but this is what I want to do with my life. Everyday I feel so empty. After my father was killed and the church took me in, everything has been the same. I wake up, eat breakfast and read, then I come here because at least when I'm with you I feel back when I was with my father, but when the day ends I go back and do it all over again. Again and Again the same thing. I'm too young to explore other parts of the kingdom and I can't ask the church. I know if I wait a few more years I'll be old enough to travel to other parts of the kingdom, but I can't wait anymore! If anyone above the age of 13 is allowed to take part in the trials of Artemis then that is my only option to get out of here. I'm sorry, but I can't wait anymore!

Mary: Is knowing what is out there the only way you can be happy? Is there nothing I can do to stop you?

  Mimir: No.

Mary: Fine then, do whatever you want.

  Mimir: Ms.Gordon, I'm sorry.

Mary: You're not sorry, you just feel guilty because what you're doing is completely selfish.

Mimir: I know, but I can't take it anymore!

Mary: Stop. Stop making excuses. Do what you want. Today is your coming of age, so since you're a grown up now, you can do whatever you want, but don't you dare NOT take responsibility for your actions. Now hurry up to the main church, it's almost time.

Mimir turned around in shame and headed towards the exit of the store. Mary with a cold and forgiving voice told him "Mimr, I'll be there tonight, ok ,and I'm sorry". Mimir turned around and only spoke one word "ok".

The sun is beginning to set and Mimir makes his way to the main church. He looks to his left and sees 4 people waiting insided. The Father, The librarian, and two children from the church, Aren and Meranda are waiting at the entrance.
