Zombie Phases

  Ranks of Zombies

The zombification process follows a structured evolutionary cycle, adapting to environmental conditions and ensuring the infection spreads efficiently. The transformation follows two major paths:

  1. The Standard Infection Path → Zombies progress through four color-based stages before potentially becoming Spore-born entities.
  2. The Mutant Divergence Path → Instead of progressing to Phase Four, certain zombies mutate into Phase One or Phase Two Mutants, developing grotesque biological enhancements.

  • Direct Bite or Scratch: The most common method of infection. Once bitten, victims enter Phase One within 12-24 hours.
  • Spore Inhalation: Infected spores, released by Phase Four zombies, rapidly corrupt the lungs and brain, transforming victims in minutes to hours depending on exposure.
  • Fluid Contact: Infected blood or bodily fluids entering wounds slows cognitive decay but extends the infection period. Some survivors resist for weeks before turning.
  • Environmental Infection: Some locations become highly contaminated zones, making prolonged exposure deadly without protective gear.

  • Appearance:
    • Skin takes on a sickly green hue with a rough, pebble-like texture.
    • Minor fungal growths appear on wounds and orifices.
    • Muscles still intact, allowing for basic movement and slow, uncoordinated attacks.
  • Behavior:
    • Instinct-Driven: Moves towards sound, light, and movement but can be distracted easily.
    • Semi-Cognizant: Sometimes mumbles words or follows patterns from their past lives.
    • Weakest Stage: Can be taken down with minimal effort.
  • Weaknesses & Countermeasures:
    • Blunt force trauma easily crushes the skull.
    • Fire is highly effective due to underdeveloped fungal resistance.
    • UV light exposure temporarily disorients them.

  • Appearance:
    • Skin darkens to a yellowish hue, and fungal plating spreads over joints and vital areas.
    • Some develop elongated fingers and nails, turning into crude claws.
    • Faster muscle decay, leading to distorted movement patterns.
  • Behavior:
    • More Aggressive: Moves in small packs, demonstrating rudimentary hunting behavior.
    • Less Distractible: Loud noises still attract them but no longer stop their pursuit.
    • Better Coordination: Starts working together in groups of 5-10 zombies.
  • Weaknesses & Countermeasures:
    • Firearms still effective but require multiple headshots.
    • UV light temporarily slows their movement.
    • High-pitched ultrasonic frequencies cause confusion.

  • Appearance:
    • Thick, orange fungal armor hardens over key areas like the chest, back, and limbs.
    • Eyes are completely milky white, eliminating sight in favor of echolocation and scent tracking.
    • Some zombies develop secondary limbs or grotesque physical distortions.
  • Abilities:
    • Regeneration: Can heal non-fatal wounds over time.
    • Enhanced Strength: Can break through doors and punch through walls.
    • Speed Boost: Capable of short bursts of sprinting.
  • Behavior:
    • Hunts Strategically: Will circle prey and wait for a perfect ambush opportunity.
    • Highly Resistant: Headshots require armor-piercing rounds.
  • Weaknesses & Countermeasures:
    • Cold temperatures slow their regeneration.
    • Explosives & high-caliber weapons are required for efficient kills.
    • Chemical agents (acid-based solutions) eat through fungal plating.

  • Appearance:
    • Fully covered in crimson fungal plating, resembling a plant-based humanoid.
    • Some attach themselves to buildings, forming organic nests that birth new zombies.
    • Tendrils emerge from their bodies, allowing limited environmental manipulation.
  • Abilities:
    • Spore Clouds: Can release airborne infection spores, transforming victims in minutes.
    • Plant-Like Regeneration: Severed limbs grow back if left unchecked.
    • Hive Mind Connection: Appears to coordinate attacks with other zombies.
  • Behavior:
    • Prioritizes Infection Over Killing: Will attempt to spread spores rather than outright attack.
    • Creates Contaminated Zones: Establishes spore nests that rapidly multiply zombies.
  • Weaknesses & Countermeasures:
    • Fire is the only way to kill them completely.
    • Extreme cold can put them into a dormant state.
    • Gas masks and full-body protection are essential when near infected zones.
