Her eyes were wild, flitting about like she was in the throes of deep sleep. Her erinyes writhed, connected to her body by strands that seemed to wither almost as fast, faster, than it could extrude new ones to maintain the contact.

He knew damn well she was too stubborn to let it go before it was too late.
Her vision focused on him. She cried out, but he couldn't tell whether her voice was full of pain or fear or relief.

“Let it go, Chloe,” Rudy said.
“I can't,” Chloe sobbed.
“Yes you can. I'm here. You just have to let go.”
“If I let go,” Chloe said, “I can't fix it.”
“You can't fix it anyway.”
“I don't know what will happen.”
“You don't know what will happen if you don't, either.”
“I screwed up again,” Chloe said.
“I know.” Rudy pulled her closer. “But we'll figure something out.”
“How?”
“You never can tell,” Rudy said.
She stared.
He winked.
She kissed him.
