A YEAR HAS PASSED, TEST#101 (II)

Shan and Woodfield hurried off to the Main Room in the Main Building; which was the place where all of the TEST workers met up for discussions, lunch and things of that sort.

All of the buildings, through #101 up to #404, were a short-walk's distance away from each other. Due to the large amount of pine trees, though, you couldn't see the other buildings from any one of them, meaning that all you saw as you got up to the fence guarding the buildings was a vast amount of pine trees overpowering you, standing effortlessly tall.

The Main Building, though, was a little distant to all of them. The Main Building was the building in which, upon your arrival, you went to to take their interview and answer their questions. It was here that Urien, our main lead who is taking us through the unravelling of this corrupt work place, took his interview and applied for the job a year from now. But nontheless, at this point Woodfield and Shan had arrived at the cafeteria. It was full of chatter and the place was so lively that you wouldn't believe it to be the same place Urien is residing in right now... They saw her, Selena. Selena Clark, as she liked being called by her full name. In the cafeteria she stood waiting for them, with her long black hair and while wearing her hockey-mask, stood eagerly.

She was wearing a black and white suit combination, and a black tie. This was her favourite piece of clothing to wear.

"Finally, took you long enough!" - she started cheerfully. "Woodfield was daydreaming about a theoretical chicken that could regenerate itself and that..." - said Shan.

"I would have guessed so.", said Selena, even letting out a little chuckle at the end of her sentence.

"Man am I tired of doing these INTERVIEWs...After each and every one they wipe my memory so that I can't remember the Testers faces. Although, having the nickname of "The Interviewer" is pretty amazing. You guys just organize some activities and sit back while doing nothing. Meanwhile I'm over here with a sore throat..."

John and Shan laughed. "Cheer up!", they said in unison. The bond between the three was a bond worth mentioning. Although they could not remember a lot, through each and every memory wipe (because, the workers had to get their memories wiped too, at the least every six months, with most of them having it be multiple times per month) their friendship stayed the same. It was the bonds and positive energy that they couldn't forget. This was one of the things the workers could remember: their colleagues.

In a way, they were all in it together, so no problems had arisen. They always had lunch together when possible, they had each others backs, but if a memory wipe of a bigger scale was to happen, would they still remember? Shan shared his experiences of the day and Woodfield did too. They were long into the conversation, sharing laughs and making jokes at one another. The night slowly fell and the cafeteria became a little more quiet.

Along the pillars and walls, yellow warm lights stood. On the speakers, which were also rarely used for public announcements, soft jazz music could be heard playing. The atmosphere was inviting but at the same time chilling, as Selena succumbed to an ill feeling in her heart. Shan and Woodfield noticed this, and they quickly asked her about whatever it is that struck her all of a sudden. "The... Well, I've told you guys that I had that extra work to do, right?"

  "Yeah?" - Shan asked.

"It was an experiment. As you know by now, and you Woodfield especially, since I've taught you about medicine and care as much as I could, that I am above the average intellect when it comes to these sorts of things. Who thought that it could have negative side effects along with it?"

Both of them said nothing, all while continuing to listen to her words.

"He... he asked me for something out of the ordinary. And I ask of you two to try and figure out what it is about. I can feel the tides changing, something, something is coming..."

"What... what did he ask for?"

"If it was possible to, using experiments and what not, to bring a human into a mutant-like form. A form in which you would be, as he said, "eternal"."

"Eternal life? What is he thinking about? That's just plain impossible for someone to achieve..."

"What if I was to tell you that I've managed to do just that? But... my God, I turned her into a monster. I did as I was told, and, no, I didn't want to proceed with it, but now she's alive and breathing standing at 6 meters tall, with claws, and..."

"Selena, Selena! Calm down! Do you hear what you are saying? Lets take it down a notch, you're going to hurt yourself! We're here for you!" Woodfield was obviously worried.

"Now she's tall as a giraffe! And on claws she stands, and she feeds on..."

"Stop! This is too much!" - Shan proclaimed as loud as he could. His voice was even louder than the jazz music playing...

"Who, just who are you talking about exactly?" - Woodfield had asked.

"This one woman... her name was, or is, Lucy. I will tell you all about her, and about my work here, which I haven't told you two yet. I fear for something greater than my life, I fear for the future of the lives of some people. Not only that, I fear for the both of you."

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

  "Selena... We're listening."

"Let me start. This... is the story of Lucy."
