Chapter 19: The Ogre Tribe
Seventy is not a large number, but when these seventy people simultaneously punch their chests and make a Roman salute - in Joni's eyes - military salute, the collective behavior full of power produced an atmosphere that was enough to shock Joni from modern times. Although he had also participated in several military trainings and seen the atmosphere where many people moved in unison, fully armed soldiers were completely different from students.
Apart from the mages and warriors, the people on this side also gave a military salute in the direction of Earl Delas. Joanie, although it was her first time, quickly learned from the people around her and managed to bluff her way through.
No unnecessary speeches, no passionate exhortations. Fully armed Earl Darius scanned the soldiers below with a glance from the steps, drew his long sword from his waist and swung it forcefully towards the castle gate: "Depart!"
More than 50 gunners held long spears in their hands, and at the same time they struck the ground with a low thud, like the beating of war drums. More than 50 people let out a low shout, as if responding to each other, as if trampling, and also like the simplest battle song, inspiring the courage of the warriors.
Under this atmosphere, Joanie's usually calm mind was also excited, just like the excitement before the first fight, with a slight tremble.
There were fifty-six halberdiers, arrayed in a square of eight by seven under the command of Rul Niss. They followed behind Count Derras, who walked at their head. Behind them came twenty-four archers, arrayed in three rows of eight, led by Essatis and following close on the heels of the halberdiers. Odara stood with Jhonni and a handful of shield-bearing guardsmen around the count, while the rest of the men-at-arms protected the wizards and sorcerers who followed at the rear of the column.
The team walked out of the castle gate, and the crowd on both sides of the street burst into cheers. Johnny in the team was no longer as nervous and timid as before, perhaps because the surrounding gaze was dispersed, he even had a strange feeling of transcending the crowd. He felt that he seemed to be overlooking everything here, watching the crowd like a enthusiastic concert, watching the team with pride like a triumphant return. Of course, Johnny walking at the front of the team couldn't see what was happening behind him, he just had this feeling.
The team quickly left the city gate of Tabriz. Earl Delas led the team to the location where the merchant team had an accident, looked around and ordered the troops to enter the forest, clearing the road, and then rested on the spot. As the only ranger in the city guard, Eisatis naturally took on the task of scouting. After handing over the command of the archer team to one of the archers, he removed his bow and arrow from his body and hid into the forest.
At rest, the entire army returned to its original state - soldiers in groups, city guards scattered in threes and twos. It's hard to imagine that such a discordant army would have strong combat effectiveness, but this is indeed the case.
"Sir, will I also be charging forward soon? You just taught me defensive moves!" Seeing everyone relax and start chatting with each other, Johnny couldn't help but look down on their quality as soldiers while asking his question.
This is a big problem.
"Rushing to the front? Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't make it clear. Odara patted her forehead, "We dual-wielders, on the battlefield, are vanguard troops because we can cut down long spears and disrupt the enemy's formation, tearing open a gap for our follow-up troops. Creatures like giants that don't even know how to use weapons should be left to the spear squad, we'll just guard the count."
The vanguard? That's easy. Jony glanced at the earl, seeing him in his ornate plate armor, with a large shield on his back bearing the emblem of two crossed longswords - the crest of House Darras. A noble of such advanced years shouldn't be leading the charge, should he? In that case, he himself was still safe.
Seeing Joanie sizing up Earl Delas, Odala said: "Don't underestimate the earl, he was also a fierce general back then, beheading over 20 enemies without a scratch. However, I've only heard that when he led his troops to exterminate monsters, he was truly brave, at least on par with a level 13 warrior. Of course, nobles wouldn't go take some dogshit guild's leveling test."
Then isn't it still very dangerous?
But it's not up to me, a useless small warrior, to fight desperately... Jony can only pray for that. When Odara introduced those two divine officials, Jony had already clearly realized that the Warrior Guild was trash, with or without the top five levels being the same, and the standard of the temple was just the warrior's standard plus five.
Going with the flow is one of Joanie's strong points, anyway can't turn around and run away, then just enjoy this brief leisure time well - even if it's the last.
After a while, Isatis came back.
"Your Excellency, the giant troll tribe is just ahead, not far from here. I see they have stored a lot of dried meat, probably from that merchant caravan they raided. There are thirty-three trolls in this tribe, with thirty adults."
Earl Dallas nodded, suddenly stood up, turned around and shouted at the soldiers: "The enemy is right in front of us, brave warriors, follow me to kill the enemy!" Not a bit of the elegance and refinement seen in the study.
"Oh!" The soldiers stood up and shouted, quickly forming a line.
"Aisatis, lead the way."
"At your service, milord."
The ogre had discovered the arrival of this team early. Thirty adult ogres lined up in formation towards the direction of the city lord's guard. They hunched over, their two powerful arms hanging in front of them, vigilantly looking at the location where the sound came from.
Trolls can regenerate, and their fear of acid and fire is well-known. The archers are now carrying rockets. They hold torches and follow the troops from behind, with sharp and firm eyes.
A giant appeared before humans, and a human appeared before giants.
With a terrifying screech, the giant devil charged towards the crowd.
"Riflemen, form ranks! Rifles at the ready!" Rul orders.
"Archers, form two ranks! Rockets!" Eisatis ordered. After the archers quickly took their positions, he shouted: "Ready... Fire!"
As the trolls ran, their arms hung down, their gait was irregular and they seemed clumsy, but their speed was not slow. At this time, the trolls had already run half of the way, Jony could see their greenish-gray skin and ugly faces.
Ignite, draw bow, fire.
Two volleys of rockets shot into the sparse ranks of the ogres, causing a chorus of wails but not halting their charge. Only one ogre was hit in the head, falling to the ground rolling and howling.
"Forward march!"
"Archers, fire at will!"
The first giant devil rushed to the front of the gun array, was pierced by a long spear and hung on it, unable to move. But this stubborn creature did not die. It struggled desperately to twist its body, wanting to get closer, closer... The subsequent giant devils also charged into the forest of guns, almost bringing down the soldiers who held the guns. The nearly three-meter-high giant devil gave people a terrible sense of oppression. Fortunately, the phalanx was not just one row, and the soldiers in the back used their bodies to support their comrades in the front, barely stabilizing the formation.
Occasionally, a giant devil would circle around the long spear formation, wanting to attack the archers on both sides, but they were all shot back by the dense hail of arrows.
Fearless and dauntless, unafraid of death, truly a terrifying monster.
The Taoist priests and sorcerers took action.
Two huge fireballs flew out from behind the crowd, exploding at the back of the giant demon group. The flames shot up to the sky, with a tremendous momentum, several giant demons fell to the ground, their broken bodies burning with flames, completely dead.
The musketeers on this side were only blown away by the blast, unaffected, and continued to desperately resist the giant's impact. However, the giants had now come to their senses. They seemed to feel no pain, swinging their paws to break off the gun barrels in front of them, not caring that the long guns were still lodged in their bodies, slowly approaching the phalanx like cutting down thorns with a knife.
The spellcasters' second fireball hits the same location again.
As the long spear phalanx was unable to withstand the giant demon's attack, Earl Delas drew his long sword and pulled out a small red bottle, pouring its contents onto the sword. The liquid ignited as soon as it came into contact with the air, engulfing the sword in fierce flames.
"Castle guards, follow me in charging!"
The rest of the people followed suit. Odala pulled out two bottles and tossed one to Johnny: "Apply." Then, wielding a flaming great sword, he charged into the giant demon pile.
Jony smiled wryly, this was probably the intense flame adhesive after all, didn't think he still had to go all out.
After applying the medicine, after charging into the enemy formation, Joanie discovered that she might have been too pessimistic.
The priest is praying, releasing one divine technique after another. The mages and wizards are no longer casting fireballs, but instead using magic missiles, a single-targeted spell. Most crucially, however, are those warriors.
Cutting melons and chopping vegetables.
Earl Dallas led the charge, cutting down one giant after another, specifically targeting their legs. The crowd following behind him, some harvesting the fallen giants, others engaging in fierce battles with the standing ones. The addition of these men greatly alleviated the pressure on the musketeers' formation, allowing those whose guns were broken to retreat to the rear and be replaced by fully equipped soldiers, who launched a sudden and chaotic thrust at the giants.
Rebirth after all takes time.
The rockets behind did not stop for a moment, the archers aimed and fired, although they could not hit the vital points, but they could always set fire to the giant's body. A thousand ants can kill an elephant, let alone these are not ants, and the other side is not an elephant.
Finally, the last giant devil fell to the ground, cut into pieces, engulfed in flames, and could no longer get up.
It was a heroic feat, with countless minor injuries but no fatalities.
Jony surprisingly didn't get hurt in the enemy formation, which indeed reflects the results of his training. What's more embarrassing is that until the flames on the great sword went out, he still couldn't cut down the giant demon who was still alive.
He was busy defending himself.
