Chapter Twenty: Such a Man
"I was twenty-two, I lived in the country until I was eighteen, then I came to California. It's just my mom and me, my dad passed away when I was very young..." Snow replied softly, her gentle voice was pleasant to hear.
"Oh... sorry..." Cui Yi's expression turned gloomy for a moment, and she reached out to put her arm around Xue Luo's frail shoulders, apologizing.
"Alright, alright, let's go eat. There will be plenty of time to talk about family matters later..." Fenton interrupted them, standing up by himself. Cui Yi also hastily agreed: "Yes, yes, let's go eat first, we must be starving!"
The dinner was sumptuous, and the long dining table was filled with all kinds of exquisite dishes that made people drool.
Fayton sat at the top of the long dining table, Cangmu and Cuiniang sat on either side of the table, and Xueluo sat beside Cangmu. Originally thought it would be a Western meal, but after looking at the dishes on the table, they were all Chinese food.
"Snow, don't be polite, eat whatever you want, we don't care about formalities..." Aunt Cui looked at Snow and said, pointing to the dishes in front of her, "These are all Chaozhou dishes. Old Master used to live there when he was young and especially likes the flavor of that place. Mu also loves eating their local dishes, so our family specially invited a Chaozhou chef... Come on, Snow, try some..."
The servant brought the freshly served soup in front of Xue, and of course it was delicious. What wouldn't be tasty? This reminded her of when she was a child, but that was too long ago, almost forgotten.
She hadn't eaten much, and didn't know why. Originally she was really hungry, but by this time, she couldn't eat anymore. Aunt Cui kept saying, until they left, still asking her: "Xueluo, is the food not agreeing with you? Why did you only eat such a little bit?"
"No, I'm already full..." She smiled at Cui Niang, and under the lamplight, that smile was like a burst of fireworks, radiant and resplendent.
"Mu, don't bully Xueluo!" Cui Yi suddenly said to Cang Mu beside her, and grabbed his hand, putting Xueluo's hand into his palm. "Remember, bring Xueluo back often..."
The air-conditioned room was neither hot nor cold, just right. The snow-covered hand wasn't cold either, but when held in his hand, she could still feel the scorching heat from his palm. Her heart skipped a beat as she suddenly thought of their wedding kiss.
Everyone thought he was kissing her, and she stiffened her body when he hugged her, but he just fell on her cheek, a light and cool kiss, as if at that moment, her heart shattered to the ground, and he disguised it so well, so well that everyone thought he was holding her, deep in a kiss.
"Alright..." He looked at Cui Niang and replied softly, then took her hand and walked out.
