Chapter 2: Time to serve first blood

As he was talking he noticed something in the forest again, and decided to see if he was crazy or not, “Yo justin, can you use your sight enhancement to see if there is something in the forest over there?” He pointed in the direction he saw the thing.

After a minute the setter replied, “Yeah, it’s a little green guy, it looks like a goblin.”

“Do you think it’ll attack, or nah,” Colin, their team's other libero, asked. “Because how are we supposed to deal with a monster? Spike it to death? Pass it around?”

“Bro how am I supposed to know? Go ask the coach, or something,” Radun answered Colin’s half joke.

“And say what, ‘There’s a little green guy in the forest, how should we kill it?’ because the only thing that will do is make the coach think I lost it, or never had,”

“I’ll tell the coach about it,” Justin said before Collin, and Radun could continue arguing.

Radun watched as Justin jogged off into the direction of their coach before asking, “What do you guys think the chance of us not being attacked being?”

“Probably none if the admin guy, and difficulty aren’t lying,” Patrick, their opposite hitter, and most pessimistic person on the team, answered

“We don’t know that, that could have been a test,” Matt lied to himself

“Why would they? What would be the test?” Radun said, “I would bet that, there’s going to be attacks every night.”

“Very based,” Patrick said. “Because what would make it hellish if we knew about every attack that’s coming? Exponentially larger waves?”

  “Don’t jynx us,” Matt said.

“Yo, coach told us to check the thing out!” Justin yelled to them, as he ran back to them.

Radun had a bad feeling, but just took a deep breath, and pushed it down, and started walking towards the forest.

He heard the others murmuring and talking as he walked ahead.

After walking to the forest for 10 minutes, he was completely on edge. He hoped his instincts were wrong.

He started to bounce a fake volleyball between his hands as he walked, trying to keep his mind off his nerves.

He started to slow down as he got closer, letting his team catch up, not at all because he wanted to stall before going into the forest, or that he was afraid to enter it alone.

When Mike caught up he said, “Yo man, I wish I could make one of those. I haven’t been able to practice at all.”

They continued to walk and talk, until finally they were there. They saw the goblin trying to be sneaky hiding behind a bush when Justin called out, “Yo, man we can see you? What are you doing?”

The only reaction the Goblin had was jumping out, and running at them. They all had the same idea.

As they ran away the goblin kept up. He just really hoped that the goblin was sprinting, Because if it wasn’t then everyone who couldn’t go much faster would be in danger. He knew he was safe, and would help the others who couldn’t boost their speed in some way, but they were still in the most danger.

“We should head to the coach,” Justin directed them. “Also someone with a speed enhancement, go sprint to him, and ask what we should do.”

Radun waited for a minute seeing if someone else would go, before speeding up, using his speed enhancement and spacial affinity to speed up.

Now that he gave it some thought, it was disturbing that he knew how to use his skills so well. Did someone go into his mind and put memories into his mind, if so what else did they do?

He was going incredibly fast, it seemed like he was taking 1 and a half steps every step, and god damn his legs were moving fast.

He got there in just a minute, and quickly told the Coach, “The goblin thing is trying to attack us, we started running right away-”

“Why aren’t you with your team?!”

“Because I was the fastest, and told to ask you what we should do?”

“You should go back, and help your team, and make a decision with them.”

He didn’t say anything back and just started to run back to his team. They were running faster.

Radun decided to push his skills farther, and run as fast as he physically could. He needed to run faster. His team was running even faster. He was at his physical limit, but needed to go faster. He pushed everything into his spacial affinity.

He was finally there, and said, “The only thing I was told was for us to make a decision. So I think we should attack it, anyone disagree?”

When no one said anything he created a volleyball, and spiked it with all his strength, also using speed enhancement.

The ‘ball’ hit the monster square in the face and knocked it over, but other than that it didn’t look, or act hurt. He knew they were fucked. But hey he got a skill.

  [New skill earned: {Spiking}]

[Skill description: Use your skills earned from years of practice to hit an opponent with a devastating serve. Reach level 10 to evolve this skill to {Copper}, and choose a new path.]

  [Starting rank: {Unrank}]

  [Starting level: 1]

He was surprised at the new skill, but couldn’t focus on it right then. After a lapse of focus he continued to attack, this time using another skill he was given.

The ball he was creating was slowly growing black, and he felt something drain from him. He always felt a subtle light drain when making his volleyballs, and that fountain of mana(?) felt big, but not large, and His volleyballs didn’t take much; Where this new fountain felt shallow, and his {Void Control} made it empty quickly, and the drain was taking all of his focus, and was heavy. The first one feels boundless, light, powerful, quick, the new one felt empty, heavy, also powerful, maybe even more than the first one, slow, and hungry.

He didn’t put much thought into it, not because he didn’t want to, but because he physically couldn’t, the void consuming his volleyball took all of his attention, both to make, and as a side effect of its existence.

The volleyball finally grew completely black. He got into a serving stance. His left hand with the volley ball was pointing in front of him, his feet made a v facing his right, his torso was turned even more right, his right arm farther back, his upper arm pointed straight, his elbow turned at a 45 degree angle, and his hand straight. He took a deep breath, swung his left hand up, took a step with his left foot, and swung with his right hand, straightening it, while moving his right foot forwards.

He hit the ball with all his strength, enhancing his right arm’s speed as much as he physically could.

The ball hit the goblin’s face with a loud smack, and for a second he thought that it looked like the goblin was being sucked into the volleyball, then it bounced off, going high in the sky, and breaking apart, before imploding. They all stood there in shock, as they were all brought out of the spell of focus created by the void.

He looked over at the goblin and noticed that it was in the same state. It wasn’t looking so strong anymore, not just because it was as confused as them, but because it was heavily harmed by Radun’s attack.

It got up, and they all tensed.

It got ready to run, and they prepared themselves mentally.

It turned and bolted, and they all let out a sigh of relief.
