Chapter 49: The Eve of the Grand Tournament

  ♂?,,

The object of the CQWW DX Contest is for amateurs around the world to contact as many other amateurs in as many different locations as possible.

Start time is UTC every year in November's last weekend, Saturday 0:00 sharp start, to Sunday 24:00 end.

The day of the cqww_dx competition has finally arrived.

On this day, countless ham radios around the world sat excitedly in front of their beloved radios, wearing headphones, waiting for the official start signal to be broadcast by CQ Magazine.

China is in the Eastern Time Zone, so it's 8 hours ahead of UTC time. Therefore, the match will start at exactly 8:00 AM on Saturday morning.

On this day, the Chinese team's hams got up early to prepare. In order to have the energy to last 48 hours, many people had already started preparing in the previous few days, not only getting the radio equipment ready but also preparing two or three days' worth of food and water. Of course, if you want to fight for a long time, quilts and blankets are also essential.

Duan Fei and Xu Wenle had already gathered in the government compound at more than 3 am, then they uniformly rushed to the northwest suburbs, when they arrived, it was still before dawn.

According to weather forecasts, Beijing will be sunny with more clouds over the next two days. Although it's not ideal weather, it won't affect the competition much.

Xu Wenjing didn't fall behind, and this time she was accompanied by two journalist friends, one of whom was intern reporter Zhong Yun, and the other was photographer Gao Yuan.

"Quiet, where is their radio station?" Zhong Yun had just arrived and was not in a good mental state at the moment. For this interview, she had hardly slept all night. This was her first independent interview since joining the internship, so she was a bit too excited.

"In the northwest suburbs, on the edge of Inner Mongolia, about a two-hour drive."

Xu Wenjing was different, she went to bed early yesterday and had a good rest.

Actually, she originally wanted to contact her ham friends on the radio, but possibly because everyone was actively preparing for this event, yesterday's frequency was unusually quiet, Xu Wenjing couldn't get in touch with the person she wanted to contact, so she had no choice but to go back to her room and sleep early like her big brother.

Zhong Yun covered her small mouth and yawned, asking: "Is it still so far? Why was the radio station set up so far away? Wouldn't it be better to put it here?"

Zhong Yun has a tall and slender figure, with an adorable face. Her lazy demeanor has a unique charm that unintentionally draws the attention of all the boys in the room to her.

Xu Wenjing loaded film into her camera and said, "Yun jie, the environment here is really bad."

"Isn't the environment bad?" Zhong Yun looked around at the large courtyard she was in, "The environment is actually quite good here, very quiet."

The greenery around here is also good, and since there are soldiers standing guard at the entrance, there aren't any idle people coming in normally. In her eyes, this place is much better than other places.

Xu Wenle, who had been paying attention to this side, took the opportunity to come over: "Yun Jie, what Xiao Jing said about the environment is not the imagined environment, but refers to the surrounding wireless electromagnetic environment. Although it looks quiet here, there are actually too many wireless electromagnetic interferences in the air, and it's not easy to set up a powerful antenna."

In fact, Xu Wenle didn't mention another point. The reason they ran to the Inner Mongolia area was not only to take advantage of the strong facilities there but also because it would be more beneficial for them to gain competition points.

According to the scoring rules of the contest, the final score of a participant is equal to "the sum of base points for all QSOs" multiplied by "the sum of multipliers for zones and countries".

To put it simply, the total score is equal to the base points multiplied by the coefficient points.

The base score is obtained based on individual ability and skill, but the coefficient score can be obtained by moving to a different division.

The competition stage between Beijing and Inner Mongolia is still quite different, after all, Beijing belongs to the area with more ham.

Assuming the competition is in Beijing, then connecting with a ham from your own district, Beijing, will not get you any coefficient points. However, it's different in Inner Mongolia, where every connection with a Beijing ham gets you 1 coefficient point. You should know that there are many hams in Beijing, and accumulating them can greatly change the final competition result.

Of course, the rules of the game are still more inclined to encourage long-distance communication, which is mainly reflected in the basic score part.

Contacts with stations in different continents score 3 points each; contacts with stations on the same continent but in a different country score 1 point each. Contacts with stations within one's own country or territory only count for multiplier credit, and do not score any points.

So, in general, China's participation in the ham radio contest is definitely more cost-effective when it comes to contacting hams outside of Asia. However, such long-distance communication not only tests the ham's operating skills and rich experience but also involves many other factors. For example, the antenna of the radio station, the surrounding electromagnetic environment, the strategy of the competition, the frequency band and time arrangement, even the activity of sunspots. Of course, during the contest, the competition station will also encounter various unexpected external interference factors. Therefore, to achieve good results, it not only requires luck but also extremely sufficient preparation.

They set off in a mighty procession towards the "base" in the northwest suburbs, and it wasn't until they arrived that Zhong Yun discovered that the facilities here far exceeded her imagination.

She stared blankly at the sign that read "Military Restricted Area" which was somewhat dazzling under the light, and couldn't help but ask Xu Wenjing in a low voice: "Wenjing, why is there a 'Military Restricted Area' sign here?"

"This place is temporarily borrowed by my brother and them." Xu Wenjing said with a nonchalant expression.

In their world, this kind of thing is indeed a bit exaggerated, but it's still not unacceptable. There are many people in the circle who play more wildly than them, and this small circle is still one of the most conservative ones in Beijing, known as "good babies" by others.

Although Zhong Yun was also a Beijinger, she was born into an ordinary working-class family, so everything she saw and experienced on her journey was extremely shocking to her original worldview.

No wonder before she came, her master told her that this interview had no technical content, but it was very difficult to get along with these young people, and if she could get along well with them, her future path might be smooth from then on.
