Chapter Eighty-One: Unraveling Morton

As soon as he heard that Li You Ran had arranged such an important task for him, he immediately burst out laughing and patted his chest to indicate that he would definitely complete the mission.

After Li You Ran finished giving orders, he walked to Zeke's side, who was checking Karl's condition. Li You Ran asked, "How is it? What happened to him?"

Zi Ge shook his head and said, "It's unclear. No one knows what exactly happens when the barbarians go berserk. All we know is that most of them die from exhaustion after going berserk, and those who survive are all powerful warriors. If it weren't for the harsh environment of the Great Snowy Mountains causing the barbarian population to be sparse, and if they didn't seem to have some sort of mission, I'm afraid this world would have been dominated by them long ago."

"Is he dead now? Or has he managed to pull through and become stronger?" Li You Ran asked, looking at Carl who had already shrunk back down to a normal size.

"Not yet, everything can only wait, waiting for him to wake up. It is said that every savage will receive the inheritance of their ancestors after awakening, but no one has ever seen it."

After hearing Zig's statement, Li You Ran said nonchalantly with a slight pout: "Alright! So now let's first get him inside and settled. Let's take a look at our new friend. This proud knight, sir, what else do you want to say? Look, your soldiers have almost told me everything I wanted to know."

Zige directed a few farmers to carry Karl into the castle, then watched as Li You Ran interrogated Field. In his opinion, his master was a bit too naive and completely unaware of some of the unspoken rules among nobles, which was very dangerous. He had to keep a close eye on him at all times.

There are many things that need to be prevented, such as accidentally killing this knight, which is not acceptable. In fact, even after fighting so many battles, only a few nobles have died, unless they cannot afford the corresponding ransom and no one is willing to pay for their release, there is still a possibility of being killed, but the probability is still very low, after all, every noble has his own master except the emperor.

"Now are you willing to say something?" Li You Ran untied Feld's restraints, but Feld, freed from his restraints, didn't dare make any sudden movements. Li You Ran's eerie abilities had given him too great a shock.

Seeing Field not speaking, Li You Ran smiled and said: "You don't have to say anything, I'll take you to your lord's presence and see how he explains it. What do you think he will say? Oakwood, come over."

The silent oak approached Li You Ran's side after hearing his summons, this child was too quiet, but Li You Ran appreciated him, he needed someone like that.

"Give me that gun." Li You Ran stretched out his hand, and Huo Mu handed the pistol over to him without hesitation.

Li You Ran held it in his hand, weighed it for a moment, and then pressed it against Field's joint. Field was caught off guard, his body shook, and he let out a miserable cry. The other half of the cry was swallowed back by himself, his eyes fixed on Li You Ran. If eye gaze could kill people, Li You Ran would have been riddled with holes by now.

"Don't look at me like that! Most of the people here are not your opponents, to be on the safe side, I can only inconvenience you! Take another shot at the other three joints as I did." Li You Ran handed the pistol to Oak and gave a faint order.

Then the crowd watched in terror as Oakley expressionlessly shot Phil's several joints, and even Phil, who was strong and unyielding, fainted from the pain.

Feld's limbs hung unnaturally, as if he had been dragged in like a dead dog, into the castle. After the grain transport team arrived and completed the transaction, Li You Ran was going to go find that guy to settle accounts, so that he wouldn't have anything to compensate for after being attacked by Viscount Feng Ye's men.

When all this was done, Morton had already brought his tribesmen to the gate of Li You Ran's castle. Li You Ran personally received them and it could be seen that he attached great importance to these people, mainly Morton.

Morton was also proud. Li You Ran had given him face, when would a lord personally receive a group of half-elves? It was already good that he didn't come out to kill them.

Li You Ran arranged them in an empty space within the castle and took out some tents from the warehouse as their temporary residence. Additionally, he sent over a set of quilts and clothes, which left the half-elves stunned. Previously, they had only used dry leaves and animal hides to keep warm.

Many half-elves couldn't help but shed tears, it's easy to imagine what kind of life they had before. When food was placed in front of them, their emotions immediately reached a boiling point. The migration over the past few days had brought them to the brink of physical exhaustion. The grain Morton had brought was long gone, and there were no fruits along the way because it was winter. As for prey, after being overhunted, most had fled deep into the forest, leaving only small animals that could be seen, but that little meat wasn't enough to go around. Basically, everyone was starving.

Now that they've seen the steaming food, especially after Li You Ran said "enjoy to your heart's content", the whole tribe is filled with joy as if reborn. Morton also looks at them with a relieved expression, he finally didn't disappoint his father's hopes, he successfully brought the tribe out safely, now they finally have a place to settle down and don't have to worry about starving anymore.

Li You Ran looked at him and patted his shoulder, saying nothing, as if he understood everything, while Mo Dun also looked at him with gratitude.

Actually, Li You Ran doesn't understand anything! He just reminded Morton, hoping he wouldn't forget that it was himself who brought them a good life, and shouldn't he quickly pledge his loyalty? Unfortunately, Morton misunderstood him. Moreover, Morton gave Li You Ran countless "good guy" cards in his heart.

"Mo Dun, now that your people are all settled in, have you thought about what you want to do?" Li You Ran asked.

"What I want to do, of course, is to be a good clan leader and let them live happily ever after. We are all a group of pitiful people, I cannot bear to see them get hurt." Morton's mood was somewhat bitter.

"No! Morton, you don't understand what I mean. What I mean is, don't you have any dreams of your own? Of course, you need to take care of your tribe, but you can't take care of them for their entire lives. You must let your tribe learn to be independent; otherwise, without you, they will immediately perish. Okay, maybe my words are a bit harsh, but you're too...how should I put it? You're too overindulgent towards your tribe, just like parents are towards their children. This won't do."

"Hmm, I don't quite understand what you mean. My dream is the responsibility that Father has given me, to let our clan live on." Morton said in a daze.

"Heavens! To survive? And then what? What's the point of surviving?"

"This, I hadn't thought of it, every day I'm busy with tribal affairs, hunting and skinning, transforming into human form to go to town to exchange for necessities of life, food, ironware, everything, I'm very busy, no time to think about these things."

"So I'm telling you to think about it, look at your own people! They've become what they are today, every day just waiting for you to come back from hunting. Even if they have the ability, they don't do anything within their power. Every time it's just you going to the human world alone, nothing happens that's fine, but what if something does happen? What will they do, starve to death?"

"I don't know, I've thought about it too, but they don't have transformation magic, how can we go to the human world?"

"This is not the point, Morton. You need to know that people can't always rely on others. You do so many things for them every day, but are you really helping them? Think about it yourself, on a day when you didn't give them enough, didn't they complain? Why? You worked hard to bring them food and a comfortable life, but what did you get?"

Morton thought that there were indeed some people in the tribe who would complain and say unpleasant things when he didn't bring back enough prey, but at that time he always thought it was because he hadn't done a good job, so he didn't retort, he just tried to bring back more next time, but he had never thought of the problem Li You Ran mentioned.

Morton's face was somewhat embarrassed as he said: "Perhaps what you say is reasonable, but what should I do? Should I give up on them?"

" Morton, if you trust me, let me handle these people. I guarantee that as long as they are willing, they can live in my territory just like ordinary people, without any discrimination or oppression. What do you think?"

Morton was silent for a long time before finally saying, "I believe you."

"Alright, next it's my turn." Li You Ran said in Morton's ear, then walked past Morton to the entrance of the half-elf camp.

"Clap! Clap! Clap!" Li You Ran heavily clapped three times, drawing the attention of all the half-elves from their food to himself.

Seeing them all looking over, Li You Ran smiled and said: "Hello everyone, first of all let me introduce myself, my name is Li You Ran, I am the lord here, a baron, of course I am also a businessman. Everyone knows what a businessman means, right? A businessman's meaning is not doing unprofitable business, that's what philanthropists do. So I have some things to announce here."

The half-elves didn't say a word, they just vigilantly stared at Li You Ran, watching what kind of trick this guy was going to play.

"Out of respect for Morton, I can let you live on my territory, but I won't provide everything you need to survive for free, including what you're using now, got it?"

A half-elf's bowl fell to the ground, frightened, looking at Li You Ran in an incredible tone: "Could it be that we were sold out by the patriarch?" The tone was tearful, with a face full of grief, asking Li You Ran.

"What? No, no, no, you are still free, even if you want to be my slaves, it depends on whether I am willing or not. There are thousands of people outside waiting to be my slaves, after all, being my slave comes with food and lodging, which is something you don't qualify for. And next time, be careful, that bowl is worth two silver coins."
