62. Special Agent Holly

“Kristy texted that Jenny came home,” Officer Higgins said with visible relief.

They were standing in the hallway just before entering the interrogation room with the captured Gilbert in it. They had a television hooked up to the recording footage of the hidden cameras in the Water Plant. The plan was to have the captured Gilbert help them watch the freed Gilbert.

“That’s a relief,” Holly said, “That poor woman has gone through enough already. We should check the surveillance cameras around the house to make sure nothing else goes wrong.”

Higgins shook his head, “She won’t be there for the next few days, so we are fine for now. She’s going on a trip with Jenny.”

Something in Holly’s guy twisted at the news. She forced herself to listen to her gut and focus on the information they had about Kristy. “A woman’s husband goes missing and then her daughter goes missing and returns. Then mid-investigation into her missing husband, she goes on vacation. I haven’t known Kristy for very long, but that doesn’t sound like her to me.”

Higgins nodded slowly and a worried look grew on his face, “Yeah, no. I think you’re right. It seems a little fishy for Kristy. We have the cameras. Might as well check the footage to be safe.”

“Sounds good,” Holly said and then motioned to the television, “Let’s get this going, and then check Kristy’s house.”

They rolled the television into the interrogation room and closed the door behind them.

“Did you find more vials?” Gilbert asked desperately. He had taken the last one today and was looking apprehensive about his future.

“Not yet, but you have a chance to find them for us,” Holly said as she turned on the Television and the displays of the water plant showed on the screen at the same time.

“What do I need to do?” Gilbert asked, staring at the screens with hunger.

“There is a Gilbert that manages this facility. At some point, he needs to use a vial too. The moment he does, you tell us where they are, we’ll steal them and bring them back to you.”

Gilbert nodded, not taking his eyes off the screen for a single moment.

Holly set a phone on the table beside Gilbert, “Call us immediately as soon as you find something.”

Gilbert nodded again, staring with a desperate focus.

Holly and Higgins left the room and headed to Higgins office where they could use Holly’s laptop in peace.

“Are you sure it’s a good idea to trust him with a phone?” Higgins said.

“I’m sure,” Holly said while booting up her laptop, “There’s a small chance Gilbert is hiding something from us, but even if he uses the phone to contact someone else, it’s rigged to record any texts or calls dialed and transmit them to me. It will also force the call to not hang up so we have a better chance of tracing it. Right now, either Gilbert will genuinely help us in the investigation, or accidentally do so.”

Higgins laughed, “You are something else, Holly. I thought the TV thing was a good idea on it’s own, but you took it even further. You never fail to impress.”

Holly did her best to hide a blush at the compliment and tried to force herself to stop thinking about how close the two of them were currently sitting. “Look here. That car looks familiar.”

They watched as a car pulled onto Holly’s driveway.

“Isn’t that Chuck’s car? That guy from the other day?” Higgins asked.

Chuck stepped out of the car and confirmed Higgins’ thoughts.

They sped up the footage for a bit until they reached the point where Chuck was dragging Kristy out of the house. Chuck drove off slowly.

“We need to run those plates,” Higgins near-shouted before rushing to stand.

“This just happened an hour ago,” Holly said, “We might be able to catch him before anything happens to her.”

They both snapped into action and Holly silently promised Kristy that she would save her.
