Chapter 37: “Final Call.” – Part 2.

Initially ducking when a wing of shadewraiths passed overhead, the six vampires had braced for an attack that didn’t come. “Wicked.” Casey looked at the other five. “I felt them.” with a hyper-concerned look in Sylvie’s full-moon eyes, Casey slipped her arm around Sylvie’s neck. “I am alright, please Taini…rex.” Casey twirled Sylvie’s blue-gray hair that loosely hung around her neck. “I’m okay…” Casey kissed Sylvie’s cheek, “...if I didn’t know better, they are high. It felt like that.” It was after a sudden colpse and tight hug that Casey held on for dear life. “I’ve got you…” She coaxed and closed her eyes while she reflected on their bond.

-Now is the moment in time where poets and writers find something lengthy and profane to get a reader lost in love. Stringing words…’saddened blooms found their deep desire…and floated on the letters within love until they reached the light and flushed with colors of red and pink, before caressing that desire in a cascade of petals…-

A nudge of her own confession ached in Casey’s chest as she held onto Sylvie. “I’ll always have you, Taini. We do this together, right?”

“Y..” Sylvie stopped and leaned back to gaze into Casey’s sun-blessed orbs. “Yes.” Sylvie finally got her passion under control and nose-kissed her partner. “Kody…” Sylvie slowly turned to look back at her friend. “It is time. I will need to know how to set the brace up and how to power it up.”

“Wait, I am going up there to make sure…” Kody protested and attempted to protect Sylvie from touching the machine. “...I am the…” Kody noted the look in both Sylvie’s slivered eyes and the warming glow from Casey’s. “...Okay.” They felt the other vampires walk behind and each one id a hand on Kody’s shoulder. “Than…thank you.”

“Sylvie has the sight, Kody.” Amber offered and patted Kody. “This is nothing you can operate with a drone or by remote.” Amber stepped up beside the vampire engineer. “We all pyed our part.”

It was only after a gre from Amber’s red-rimmed and ever-sparkling teal eyes, that Jason found words for both himself and Daniel. “Yeah, that.” He looked down at Daniel and swiftly picked her up in time to get a small smack to the back of his head. “What…” He gnced between the two women. “Kody. We’ve…um.. known since the meeting that this was Sylvie’s task. Casey isn’t going to let anything happen to her..” Jason looked thoughtfully at Casey. “Right, Rivers?”

“Idiot.” Daniel whispered and the group ughed to break the tension.

Without any further convincing, Kody quickly went and grabbed the unwieldy brace in both hands and carried it back to the group as though it weighed next to nothing. “Alright, I just loaded the element to this chamber.” They pointed to a wide can-shaped container. “Since you are blood-matched, I figured we didn’t actually need separate blood vials this time.” Kody pointed to a gss tube beside the canister. “Fill it to the line and our blood will dissolve the yer of metal so the blood will drop into the chamber.” Kody looked at the others and their power button eyes glowed red. “That is the timer. One of you will have to make sure that the portal is closed before twenty minutes has epsed.”

“You didn’t put a timer on it?” Casey giggled and looked at the engineer. “Oh come on, every movie ever has a countdown clock on it.”

Shaking their head and with a neutral look, Kody continued. “When you get to the ring, you simply have to set it down, canister side up and press the lock.” They pointed out the little dial that had a picture of a lock on it, denoting both positions. “Once it is locked, hit the power button and that should be it.” They looked at the crowd. “It isn’t very complex to operate, but I wanted to be up there in case something didn’t work right.” Kody sighed, “It is more stable because I pulled the remaining nano-circuits from my cybernetics.” Spotting the shocked look from Sylvie’s full moon gre, Kody held up their hand. “While the circuits didn’t work for me..it doesn’t mean they didn’t work.” Kody shrugged, “Essentially they are more stable than anything that Twilight Tonight could have gotten me.”

With a slight hesitation, Sylvie pulled away from Casey’s grip to get a better look over the controls and committed them to memory. Quickly picking up the brace, Sylvie took a moment to address the others. “I would ask you all to get out of here, but I don’t know that you could get away in case something were to happen.” She nervously ughed and knew that it could be the st time she saw any of their faces again. “What a ride, huh?” Sylvie sighed.

“I am only hanging back because you asked.” Kody looked down sheepishly and bit on their lip in contemption of having a world without Sylvie in it. “You’ve been here with me since before…” Kody stopped themself before the blood tears started. “All the same, I’m not going anywhere.” Kody pointed to the horrific wraith-forms as they plunged into the portal. “What if the song stops or something, you’ll need some cover..” Kody trailed off.

Taking a few steps back, Amber crossed her arms and let out a little giggle. “Understatement of the year, Sylvie. The vampire that started it all isn’t even with us anymore.” She looked up at a few fleeing bats, Most of the ones that were watching are making a break for it.” Amber turned and looked towards the woods where Jessica had disappeared. “I just want Jessica back, we’ve already lost Veronica.”

“You throw one hell of a party, girlie.” Daniel hopped off of Jason’s back and popped on her toes to give Sylvie a hug. “Jason and I have your back.” Daniel winked, “Just in case.”

“Why does this feel like a funeral? I mean we are already dead right?” Jester joked unsuccessfully. “Yeah, okay. I get it, I’ll stop.” He picked up Daniel and held her tightly to his chest. “Finish this, Sylvie.”
