Chapter 32: “Check” – Part 2.

“Yes, Archaios Enas. Eat, e…suffer…extreme chaos.” The newborns all ted. “Devour equals power.” Their diamond eyes fred and they all bared their metallic teeth and then flew off in search of their prey.

Invisible to the other shadewraiths by using the same magic that had shielded her from observation from the white-wraith before, Heather had made her way to the portal hill just in time to see Tatum’s body fring with magic to give rise to more shadewraiths without cost to Enas herself. ected as she was to Gaia, Heather could almost feel the uing pain that occurred with every corrupted birth.

Leadio this point, was the st thing that Tatum said to her just before the atta her home came. Heather thought at the time it was strahat the attorney would hand her a USB drive and say nothing more. Only after Heather plugged in the device to her tablet, did the young mage uand. Before her in cryptic overtures that only Heather would uand, were instrus and a yout of both the Crow farm and Tatum’s own home. While the information therein was coded, it was still made by the very woman who was now in Archaios Enas clutches and thus time to learn and uand was not oher’s side. Running her hand through her brown-gray hair, Heather did the best she could to memorize different runes and their abilities as they fshed by on her little s.

“This is pretty useless, Carrie.” She turo her tiny daughter who simply looked up at her mother with wide brown eyes. “I have no skill for pnning things like this…it's why the other captains were in charge.” She told herself aloud and turned off the tablet. “I need something other than just running in there and trying to out cast Tatum.” Sliding her brown eyes closed, Heather had just started thinking about the mgressive spells much like Denise would use while training the others she’d awakened when Carrie began g.

It wasn’t difficult for Heather to know why Carrie was g. Both of them had been in the car for hours as Heather looked over the plethora of information that was otle thumb drive. Taking a deep breath, Heather finally drove her small car up the short driveway to the Crow farm. Sliding her car beside the antique blue and white Chevy Bel Aire that was now part of the estate. After pulling Carrie’s g form from the car, she let Dusty out of the other side aook off running towards the former duck pond.

With the farmhouse more or less boarded up and useless, Heather made her way into the barn where she’d lived until the news of her pregnancy. “Carrie…Carrie…” Heather bounced and lightly sang to her infant daughter who steadfastly refused to settle and st. “Mommy really needs you to quiet down so I think about how to get our friend back…” Heather smiled at Carrie and kissed her on top of the head. “...That’s right, Tatum is a great friend and we…”

It was just then that what Heather read oablet suddenly made sense. “Carrie, love you are a genius!” She darted up the partially broken and burairs to the pile of ics that had beely stacked by Vivienne months before. “Something has to be in here, these are by date.” Heather mumbled to herself and ultimately found what she was looking for. Pointing out what she’d found to her daughter, Heather read the passage she wanted aloud. “See here Carrie? Magiagibsp; She traced the dark run on Carrie’s tiny hand, “...hree things. Body, Mind, and Spirit. We remove one of them and it doesn’t work.” Heather cooed pyfully, “It is why our beor Miss ade it a cult-like atmosphere. She literally trolled these things within us.” Heather hugged Carrie tightly, “You, baby girl, broke the hold she had on me. I suspect it is because you didn’t have the choice that I did…but, I will never know for certain without more research.”

A few hours ter, Heather had the outline of the pn she wao use. “Okay, Carrie. We are going to do a few things.” She made a silly face at her daughter who simply ughed, “Alright. We are going to steal back her spirit.” She showed Carrie the ruhat she was going to use. “See these, little one? They form a little spell that should…” Heather picked up Carrie and swung her daughter so that it appeared that Carrie was flying. “...Well, let’s leave that a surprise.”

A sudden howl of glee from one of the shadewraiths brought Heather out of her deep and reflective thought and ba her mission. Leaning against one of the desiccated trees, Heather took a deep breath and brushed her graying hair bato a ponytail. A quick look and kiss to her surprisingly quiet daughter, aher pushed off the tree trunk and pressed her runed palm to the ground and just like she’d pnned, a small oval of hematite encircled her and Carrie’s invisible form. “That seeing past thing…Tatum, Denise…priceless.”

With her prote and stealth in pce, Heather took her time and made her way to the base of the portal where she had a clear line of sight to Archaios Enas and was still pletely ued. She reached into her pocket and grabbed a handful of kyanite and slipped a very old e band on her pinky that she’d cimed from the sm house. trating oriple spells she would have to use, Heather raised her white runid and called the rune sequeo the front of her mind. Immediately after her mind passed over the st rune in her list, her palm released a set of white spidery wisps that matched the tendrils Archaios Enas was posed of. Initially ohread weaved its way underground to encircle Enas’s feet and quietly pulsed, waiting for the others. Heather’s remaining magical fibers spread out aly bined with the white-wraith’s tendrils that were no longer tained within Tatum’s body.

Heather stood quietly and removed the ring and pressed it into her palm as the spell she’d cast took effebsp; Although the grass was wet and mucky, the extreme heat provided by the spell caused the area beh Enas’s feet to burst into fmes and then magically stick to Tatum’s stolen body like napalm. Starting with Tatum’s feet, the hellish fire cremated the mage's body as it traveled upward. Ash spread over the small area as Tatum’s body disappeared a Archaios Enas with just her bone white and vile form screaming in vain.
