Chapter Seventeen; Part I: Championship

I am standing in the middle of the ancient forest, in the arena, surrounded by greedy, furiously sparking eyes. To my left stands one person, on the other side eight more. In front off us the person, the one standing at the register. He explained the procedure and rules of the upcoming championship. Every year all ten great champions come together and compete for the best of the best—The king of the champions. And this week this rare event was scheduled. I, as the newest had now my chance to prove my worth.

The former champion I had defeated, a few months ago, was ranked seventh, last tournament. So I was quite sure I would come at least that far. But I wasn’t idle either and improved quite a lot again, so I thought my chances were good for a higher ranking Even when looking at the impressive physics of the dudes beside me.

The champions I knew only little, five of them I never even saw. The others only in the one or other fight. So I had no clue about their abilities, which made me in an uncomfortable situation. Us champions were forbidden from regularly fighting each other in matches, due to respect. We could only be challenged by the best of the best in the normal ranking. I, as a new member, received the most request, as my position, as the alpha predator, wasn’t established yet. Until now I fought the challengers relentlessly and won without fail.

The first round of the tournament was an all versus all, due to the unfortunate number of participants that needs to be reduced by two, as to be able to fight in a K.O.-system (all 1vs1 one opponent; than the winners move on. The losers move fight the other losers for the last places. And so on).

The referee left the arena and with his shout, accompanied by cheering and singing from the crowd, the match started. But none moved in the arena. All wanted the others to fight and if possible get not involved, which would guarantee moving on. As well as not being targeted by all at once. As I couldn’t stand it any more, I moved up to my left neighbour, he was bulky, gigantic, but not as much as some others here. I said “let’s fight”. Whereas he just nodded. We moved more outside, so that the others wouldn’t target either of us and get involved.

Our match started as I leaped forward with a ground-breaking speed, surpassing the sound barrier and creating a sonic-boom. Only fuelled with my inner energy this feat possible. My opponent raised his guard instantly and took my fist head on. The collision, yet again shook the whole of the arena. He had no problem defending, but still was pushed deep into the muddy arena. Suddenly, only short after my attack the sonic-boom came, as I had been fast as it. The gigantic air pressure wave, caused me to gain more momentum and pushed my opponent on his knees. As I couldn’t let go of this chance I moved behind him, but just as I wanted to knock him out, I ducked instinctively. Just in time to evade a deadly attack from behind. It was another champion, but he was away already. His tactic, was to hit and run, the others, when concentrated in battle. And my opponent was also one of his victims. He had tried to stand up, using my confusion, but he was attacked right after me and was knocked motionless on the ground.

Looking around the battlefield all were fighting, only one particular guy was standing still in the middle. Albeit his small figure he was the king, no one had the confidence to deal with him. But I had no one to fight against any more, so I said ‘fuck it’ and went to the second best.

I greeted him and then challenged him. Started the fight with the same strategy as before, he stood still, and as my fist connected he didn’t move the slightest. But than I realized I hadn't even hit him, it was a, energy barrier, neglecting all the damage. I tried a few more times but came rapidly to the conclusion, I couldn’t do any thing when I proceed like this.

What I needed to do, was to switched to magic attacks, in hope of breaking his shield. I gathered my energy in my hand, while running towards him. He saw my intention, so he stepped aside, as the attack could be dangerous. But I anticipated it, and as I was just about to miss him, I twisted my body sideways, and released the energy lightning from my other hand. This move was only possible, due to the nearly instant casting time. As my opponent thought he already had evaded the danger, he was surprised by it and unable to evade it. The lightning pierced through the shield smoothly, and knocked the guy over. Just as I was about to finish him the referee stopped the round, because another dude had lost. So all, including my opponent will move on.

A long break later, the new matches were drawn. I was up against the former fourth, he was renown for his godly defence and endurance. Which made him my worst match-up.

Our fight was the second to start, we fought for quite the time. At first I needed to break through his energy shields, which wasn’t too bad and could be done with energy attacks. But his shields kept renewing endlessly, which was annoying. Albeit his good defence his offensive power was completely weak., he couldn’t even dream of hitting me, in my top form. But nothing I normally used could help me, until I had an idea. I used my energy wave attack—I kinda had forgotten—and focused it on a piece of dirt on my opponents shield. The attack made It’s way within a fraction of a second, then straight through the first, the second, the third, and fourth magic barrier. Still it made no sign of slowing down, it pierced the bulky, thick shield, and hit my opponent chest. The effect was only small, but I found a way to win.

With the new addition to my arsenal, I tiered my opponent out, and after sometime knocked him out. With this I won. Thereafter the next round was announced to be tomorrow, as it was quite late, and all were tired. The four still in the tournament, are the following, the first ranked—which is the guy with the hit and run strategy in the beginning round, the second ranked—the guy who stood in the middle the whole time, the fifth ranked—he is a strength based guy, who is quite good.

In the academy’s dormitory I was lying on my bed, unable to sleep. After my last match I realized, that energy in wave form could trespass energy shields. As I used them too, I needed to find the reason. I must cover this weakness. To achieve this I needed to find the reason, which is quite simple, the shield and wave, have the same wavelength and properties, so they add up and nothing happens. To fix it I just needed to add a property to my barrier, which reverses the wave. This would make the wavelength cancel each other out. I tried it out and it worked just fine. So I fell asleep without worries and was exited for the next matches.
