Chapter 16: Attempted Murder

Bawl meets with Kid Death again and talks to him. They seem to have gotten a little closer since their last meeting yesterday.

“So, you entered the Raiders Exam just because. No real reason at all?”

  “No.”

“How foolish, you’ll just be wandering aimlessly like that if you have no goal.”

  “That’s fine.”

Kid Death looks at him, confused by his response but brushes it off as he doesn’t really care all that much anyway, he has his own goals and has no time to worry about whether others do as well.

“By the way, who do you think will get killed next?” Bawl asked.

“How the hell should I know? Seems random to me.”

“Maybe...they try to kill me next?” Both Kid Death and Bawl stare at each other in silence.

  “Maybe they will.”

Eonni is in the room, trying to create a skill after having thought long and hard about what could be useful in battle.

“I’ll just need to have it like this, and I’ll be sure to provide much more use than with those balls.”

Alexander is walking across the halls when he once again spots the woman staring at him from a distance. She disappears again but Alexander isn’t letting her get away.

“HEY! HOLD ON!” Alexander turns the corner to see nobody present.

“Damn it. Who the hell is that?”

Alexander looks around a bit more before abandoning the idea.

“Well, it doesn't matter, I need to figure out which staff member is gonna kill next. From what I saw so far, 3 and 5 disappeared after the murders. It seems to be counting up and not in direct order. I would say that it may go up by 2 but that seems too obvious.”

Alexander continues walking, thinking about the solution to beat this part of the test. He looks down a hallway to see the staff carrying a coffin, presumably with the body of the person murdered.

“As a knight, I shall avenge you, unknown stranger.”

  –2 Hours Past–

Bawl seems to be in the room along with Eonni. Bawl is playing with his now pet shark, who clearly doesn’t like him all that much.

“So, Bawl, when you get your Raider Badge, what do you intend to do?”

  “Hm? Badge?”

“Yeah! It’s like, one of the greatest things to have, while also being the hardest things to obtain.”

  “Does it give me stuff?”

“Obviously, it gives so much, that's why there are so few hunters in the world, the tests I heard are super hard. I heard it gives things like 90% of countries are accessible to you since a lot of countries don’t allow outsiders, 70& of private and restricted places are available to you, 95% of public facilities are required to give you their services for free and other services are free of use with the high grade given to you automatically. And that’s just a few of them.”

“A-alright.” Bawl doesn’t know what she means by this but continues to let her talk.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

“I also heard that as long as you raid 10 dungeons minimum every month, you are paid $890,000 every month. Isn’t that crazy! There’s also the fact that if you apply for a job, you don’t need to fulfill any of the education, age, or degree requirements.”

“Okay.” Bawl is starting to steam from his head, having an information overload from all this information he doesn’t understand.

“There’s also being exempt from most legal responsibility, so things like murder or inhumane acts are brushed under the rug, which...people aren’t too happy about since hunters usually take advantage of that to an immoral degree.”

“So, if I beat someone up, I won’t go to trial again?”

  “Again?”

“Some stupid bald guy had me in a cage.”

“Oh! So that was what you people were talking about. I heard that something happened during the trial. Some goop broke in?”

“Some man covering face tried to fight me, then mom finished off the guy.”

“I see.” Eonni goes back to trying to create her skill.

Alexander enters the room and takes off his cloak and jumps into the bed. He rolls around before laying his head on the pillow.

“What are you doing?” He asked Eonni.

“I’m trying to make a new skill. My balls got destroyed and I don’t have enough money to repair the machinery, so I had to give the skill up.”

“Right, during the fight with that boss. Well, hope you can make a new skill, it better be useful, we’ll need as many people as possible to beat the exams.”

  “Yeah, I know.”

It becomes nighttime and both Eonni and Alexander are asleep. Alexander sleeping on the bed and Eonni is on the floor.

Bawl wakes up and leaves the room, wearing only a shirt and pants with no shoes, he walks around the ship and goes to the bathroom. He starts to pee but realizes that he left the room for no reason, there was a bathroom in his room already.

“Damn.” He finishes peeing and leaves the room. As he is walking back to his room, he sees a staff member in the distance, the staff member has an armband with the number 7. The number transfers to the front of the mask and the woman starts to rush Bawl with the knife in hand.

Bawl doesn’t seem to react to this, he is still half-asleep. The woman seems to dash in a fashion that an expert assassin would, trying to stab Bawl in the neck.

The knife breaks upon contact and the woman is shocked by her body movements. She repairs the knife using her skill and tries to cut him on the knee but that also doesn’t work.

Bawl still doesn’t react to this and reaches out, not seeing much due to his eyes being halfway closed. He accidentally grabs the woman’s boob and then let's go, knowing that it's not a doorknob.

Bawl tries to walk past the woman, but she doesn’t relent and kicks him on the head, sending him across the hall. This wakes Bawl up completely and he realizes that he is being attacked.

  “Why are you attacking me?”

She doesn’t respond and keeps attacking him. Bawl dodges the attacks and grabs the blade, snapping the blade off by pulling. The woman doesn't stop and transforms the broken blade into a sword.

“Hm? You’re not going to win, you know.”

The woman doesn’t respond and dashes towards Bawl. She swings the sword but Bawl dodges. He only dodges because he wants her to understand that he could dodge her attacks anytime. She swings again but this time he doesn’t dodge and the blade breaks. Bawl flicks his finger, and the shockwave hits the woman in the stomach, knocking her out due to the pain. Bawl tries to leave but miraculously, the woman recovers rather quickly from being knocked out and gets up. She clearly seems to be struggling to get up, but she pushes through the pain and dashes towards Bawl. Bawl grabs her face and throws her into a nearby trash can. He walks back into the room, locks the door, slams back into the large bean, and goes back to sleep.

It's the next day and Bawl is still asleep while Eonni is awake, first thing in the morning, trying to make her skill. Alexander leaves the room, and he walks to the cafeteria, wanting to see if there is another body.

He sees another body in the cafeteria, but the body seems very brutalized, with many more stab marks, the face nearly unrecognizable and mutilated, being laid on the table. Almost as if this killer was taking their anger out on this person.

“Jeez, did the killer hate this guy or something?” Alexander thinks to himself, not trying to look at the body for too long since he doesn’t want to lose his appetite.

Alexander notices Kid Death walking up to him.

“Excuse me, your friend's name is Bawl right? Where is he?”

  “You know him?”

  “I have business with him.”

“Um, yeah, he’s currently still sleeping so you’ll have to wait. While you wait, why don’t you talk to this amazing knight.”

Kid Death already seems to be leaving, leaving Alexander feeling a little bit offended from being abandoned like that.

  “Rude.”
