Ep. 1373 Preparing to Leave Part 8

When the four crowns are done I put them away and take out the papers that Lin gave me. I sit down and seriously study the modified spell to see if I can make it even better. As I am studying it I realize that I made a major mistake from the very beginning.

I was too focused on how to actually see someone's potential and missed the basic idea of the spell. It should work like my dragon eyes ability, or like an inspect skill in a game. It doesn’t need to give a detailed measure of potential, it just needs to qualify people by rank.

For example, those with the highest potential would be listed as either A or S rank. By using such classifications, the structure of the spell itself can be made much simpler. Not only that, but the government officials would be able to use it like a basic inspect skill which has its own uses.

Now that I have had the thought, I scrap the current spell, grab some paper, and start over from scratch. This time I design it as an enchantment that is intended to be a part of the system. That should make it easier, instead of making it a spell and then converting it to an enchantment.

I can even scale it based on permissions level, meaning the lower ranks will just get to inspect basic information. Then as the authority increases they will be able to see more information. Governors and above are the only ones who will really need to be able to see a person’s potential.

Now that I think of it, aside from potential I should make it show any special talents the person has. Just like potential, it is hard to define talents in the language of magic, but I do my best. It quickly turns into the most complex enchantment I have ever attempted, but it actually seems to be working.

Or at least, it looks like the enchantment will work, but I am far from finished with it. Even as I am reaching the end, I can already spot several places where I made mistakes. As I go back to correct them, I also find some places where I can improve the language I used.

After going over it several times and making it as good as I can, I take it and go looking for Lin. Instead, I find Brightfire and Mercy in the main room and they tell me Lin is in her tower. Apparently, she left orders that I am not allowed to disturb her, so I sit down with the two of them.

As soon as I do, they both lean against me so I put an arm around each of them. We sit and cuddle as we chat about random things for a while until Asuna, Bella, and Mulan come back. The three of them have been doing tattoos and are taking a break to have some dinner.

I notice Bella smirking at me, but I am not about to say anything in front of the kids. Instead, we join them in having dinner and chatting about how the tattoos are going. Asuna and Mulan are really excited because today they were finally allowed to do tattoos without supervision.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Both of them are excited and proud of what they accomplished, which makes me happy. Bella chimes in to praise them, which makes the two of them practically vibrate with happiness. It is obvious that they have worked hard to get to this point, so I make sure to praise them as well.

“So, does this mean that they are qualified to be tattoo artists now?”

Bella says “Pretty much. There is nothing left for me to teach them, all they need now is practice.”

“So, what do the two of you want to do now that you have graduated?”

Mulan says “I figured we would just keep doing tattoos. Isn’t that why you had Bella train us?”

“No, not at all. I wanted you to learn because you showed interest in it. I have no plan to force you to continue if you don’t want to. Bella has other apprentices for that, you can do whatever you want.”

  Asuna says “Really?”

  “Yes, really.”

Bella says “Ash, you are a really good father.”

  Mercy says “I agree!”

  “Why do you say that?”

Bella says “Because, even without forcing them, you could have encouraged them to do what you want. But you left it completely up to them!”

“That’s because what I want is for them to do what they enjoy. They are still kids and they deserve to have a childhood no matter what may be going on.”

Brightfire says “That is partially what makes you such a good father. As much as I love my father, I wish that he had been more like you.”

Luckily, before anyone else can say anything embarrassing, Lin comes down the stairs. She has a huge flat screen T.V. floating next to her which draws everyone’s eyes. When she gets close to the table, two beams of light come from the T.V. and hit Bella and I.

I don’t feel anything when the light hits me and it only lasts for a few seconds. I am guessing that since it only targeted me and Bella that it has something to do with targeting our worlds. Lin quickly confirms that to keep Bella from freaking out and then asks me to see if I can see the enchantment.

“No, I cannot. I would have to break the lock to be able to try and see anything.”

Lin says “Could you break my lock?”

  “Yes, but I won’t. I promise.”

Lin says “I am going to go register the other summoned, but when I get back I want you to teach me how to make a better lock.”

“Sure, I can do that. I will also teach you how to break someone else’s lock.”

Lin says “Deal! Alright, I will be back soon.”

Lin leaves with the T.V. following her and the rest of us go back to enjoying our meal. Even after we finish eating, we just continue sitting at the table chatting and relaxing. Before long Lin returns and Brightfire shifts over a seat so Lin can sit next to me.

Lin says “I have targeted all of the remaining summoned. In total, this T.V. can now view twelve different versions of Earth. Much like the spell I used to locate things to summon, it reacts to your thoughts. So, after selecting your home, if you think of someone in particular it will show them if they are still alive. Otherwise, you can just move it around to view different things.”

“That sounds perfect! How do you change channels?”

Lin says “Just think of the number of the channel you want to watch. Or, if you think of your world, it will go to that channel.”

“Great! Bella, I can see that you want to, so go ahead. You can use it while I teach Lin about locks and how to break them.”

Bella says “Thanks! I will take you up on that!”

Bella moves over to a couch and the T.V. moves on its own to float in front of her. It turns on and changes to a channel without her having to do anything, showing a modern city. Not wanting to pry into what she wants to see, I turn my attention to teaching Lin.
