After working for a few more hours on purpose, Leonora was finally getting tired. Karma asked if she wanted to join them, but when Leonora heard where they were going she dipped real quick. This finally left Fausto and Karma by themselves. Thankfully, it was in a place that no one would expect.
“Excuse me Fausto???'' Karma was looking at Fausto awkwardly as she kinda felt uncomfortable. But Fausto was rather calm about it, as he was looking at the touchpad.
“Yes?” He was still finding it weird that Karma was sticking rather close to him. Faust was rather jealous as he wanted her to be like that during the day. He wonder how Fausto gets the girls.
“A few more hours!!” Faust desperately waited while Karma finally could talk, as she couldn’t hold it anymore.
“Why are we here with all the dead people??!!!!!” Karma screamed as there were several corpses around. With so many dead bodies, it creeped out Karma, who thought many of them would come to life like zombies. Really, though, who takes a girl to a cemetery?
“What's wrong with dead people? In fact these dead people have their uses.”
“Then why did you tell me to come here??!!!” Karma objected. “You say this is a quiet place.”
“It is...there is no one around.” Fausto said as he pointed at all the dead bodies. “The only ones listening are dead people.”
“That doesn’t count. They are still bodies!!!”
“But dead bodies.” Fausto pointed out.
“Is this how you spend time with people???” Karma asked as she started to realise her idol has his flaws. One being that he is socially awkward, as shown on Fausto's facial expression after hearing that question.
“....I don’t spend time with people???” Fausto said as he was finding that a rather interesting question. He is dealing with dead people. He his patients was unconscious. So, how does that even count? He wondered. She then dropped to her knees.
“So this is what I get for working with a genius….He takes me to my grave…” Karma whimpered as she was about to cry.
“Are you not feeling well? You sound like you in pain.” Fausto questioned as he was finding Karma acting weird.
“Anyone spending time with you makes them think they are pain.” Faust pointed out, as he was surprised by it too. Fausto wondered what he meant by that. After all, it is his job to check dead bodies for anything suspicious to see if they were murdered or not. Many detectives in the city ask for his counsel because he is very accurate in determining how the person died. This was one of the ways he stayed on people's good side. It was just a simple side job that helped build his reputation, but he now had to get down to real business. As he finished his work, he looked at Karma with a serious expression.
“Well now that we are done. How about I tell you about yourself?”
“Myself???” Karma wondered what he meant by that as she got up, hearing strange words she never would have heard before.
“Yes. Didn’t you notice how fast you were compared to average people? Or the fact that despite your frame, you were lifting more than what a human woman should lift?” Asking Karma, she then thought about it. Before, when she ran, she was slower than most guys. Now, when she ran, she was out racing even dogs once in a while. Then early today, left and right she was lifting 200 lbs and even 300 Ibs guys. It was crazy but she never thought about that. Even when she never lifted or did any powerlifting before either.
“Yeah but Gilius told me that it was because I was different. He said it was just unusual?” Karma said. “Besides, he said there were others like me."
“Yes there are others like us as well. But he didn’t tell you what we are.” Fausto said.
“What do you mean?” Karma said as she heard the words we. “Are you saying that you are just like me?” For the first time, Fausto was going to do what he usually prefers to keep as a secret. It was quite refreshing and rebellious. Taking a deep breath, he started the training.
“How about a game of tag? If you can catch me, I'll give you a reward.”
“Really??!! What is the reward?!” Karma said in excitement.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
“Anything you want?”
“Are you sure? Because no one has been able to outrun me. Since you said I can get anything?! I know what I want.” Karma said in excitement. She was thinking about getting a reward from him after having to kiss Leonardo. Because really, kissing Leonardo left a bad taste in her mouth. So she was thinking of having Fausto pay for that. Hoping to get exclusive lessons on the surgical table, her motivation went up. This caused a stutter in Fausto's face and excitement in Faust. But both would have reacted differently if they knew what she was thinking.
“Since you agree, then let's begin whenever you are ready..” However, Karma, before Fausto could say go already was about to grab him. “Woah...that was close.” Side-stepping he was an inch away from being touched.
“How?” Karma couldn’t believe Fausto sidestepped faster than her eyes could see. She didn’t notice that he was that fast.
“Are you going to quit now?”
“No!!” In that instant, she kept trying to tag him, but just as he was just there, he would move. It would constantly irritate her, but she didn’t give in as she was determined to win. Yet as time progressed, she was tiring out. On the other hand, Fausto, who somehow found a rubik's cube, played with it while being chased around. She couldn’t do anything. But what surprised her was Fausto, who wasn’t looking buff, was outperforming her. Eventually, after a few minutes, she wore down, dropping to her knees.
“Well what do you think?” Handing her water, Fausto then found a spot to sit next to her. Even when he sat down and she tried to take that opportunity, she still couldn’t touch him. It felt like he was so close yet so far.
“How are you so fast?” Karma said as she was chugging the water due to how exhausted she was. Fausto then played with the shadows as he kept moving it around.
“We are really special beings. Compared to diviners who are given energy to be able to create things using light, we use the shadow to assist us in manoeuvring while enhancing our physical strength. Not to mention the shadow gives enhancements to our bodies as well.”
“Shadow?”
“Yeah, remember when you were burned. The shadows healed you.” Fausto then cut himself with a scalpel. It was a deep cut as he was bleeding a lot.
“Fausto that…” Karma was trying to help but then, like before, the shadow coursed through his veins as it covered the blood. Eventually, the injury vanished as though nothing had happened.
“See the shadow. Or as Diviners call us, shadow dwellers. Even injuries that could be proven fatal to most humans would be healed faster than humans. Healing varies between Dwellers, but those who are stronger with the shadow do tend to heal faster, like you and me.”
“Like Vampires?” Ah…. thinking about the name, it sounded like something really dumb.
“....Like people who roam in the night…” Fausto said but then again, it did sound like they were vampires in a way. He never thought about that before but it seemed to be the case.
“Why the name?” Karma asked just to have Fausto demonstrate by going towards the shadow. As he walked inside the shadow, it wasn’t anything special. But as he leaned towards the shadows it looked as though the shadow was pulling him in. “Fausto!!” Being absorbed, Fausto was gone. Karma then went towards the shadow to see if there was a trap door, only to notice it was a normal wall. But suddenly….
“Boo!!”
“Ah!!” She screamed as Fausto's head soon popped out. Getting out of the shadow, he came out like nothing had happened. For some reason, Fausto didn’t know why he said that, but he really couldn’t help it. Never thought teaching about using the shadow was so much fun.
“That is why we are called that. Because of our ability to move within the shadows.”
“So does that mean...I can do that as well.”
“Hmm well only one way to find out.” Fausto then grabbed her and put her against the shadows. Before that, he then took off the bracelet.
“Why did you do that?”
“This bracelet is very strange. But wearing it seems to prevent you from using your abilities.” Fausto was finding it weird when he met her. Even when he looked at it, it looked like a simple bracelet. yet for some reason when he took it off of her wwrist, Karma's shadow seemed to rather happy at it.
“Really? But that is what my mother told me to wear every day.”
“And where is she?”
“She left when I was young?” Originally interested Fausto let it be as he can look at her history later.
“Well, I don’t know the reason as to why. But I can tell you that without this, you should be able to move within the shadows.” Wearing the bracelet, he thought something would happen to him. He was trying to feel if there was anything special it held. Observing a few more times, nothing was showing. Putting it in his shadow, he felt like Karma didn’t need it anymore.
“So, how do I do it?” Karma said as she was in the shadows but nothing was happening at all. In fact, she was jumping around and pressing on the wall but nothing happened. Fausto laughed in humour.
“You can’t force yourself. Remember you were born with the ability, that means you should be able to move through it as though it were natural.” Fausto then touched the shadows and he didn’t hesitate as his hand got absorbed into the shadow. “You have to trust the shadows. Otherwise, how can they ever let you in.” Hearing that, Karma then closed her eyes and took deep breaths. Walking forward, she imagined that there wasn’t a wall. Thump...she then hit the wall.
“Oww.” She then looked at her nose as it hurt.
“Hahaha…” Fausto couldn’t believe that happened, as it was the first time he had ever seen it. So surprised that he couldn’t hold his laughter. Turns out training others does have its charm. “Ah, that was humorous. I didn't think that would happen!!!” It was actually the first time he had ever laughed this hard, to be frank.
“Not funny!! Tell me what I did wrong!!!” Karma said as she still can’t get through.
“It's not about getting through the wall. If you are telling the shadows to allow you to go through the walls, then you are wrong. You are asking to enter the shadows. Only by trusting yourself to it, would it lead you to another world.” Fausto then entered the shadows as she stretched her hands out. “Want to try one more time?”
“Okay, I can do this!!!” Karma then took a deep breath as she slowly took her steps. Trusting the shadows, she walked closer, not through the wall but into a world. Unlike before, she didn’t think about the floor or the wall. Letting all be forgotten, she didn’t know why but she was feeling a warmth not like before. She hadn't felt like this in a long time. Almost as though she had reunited with her long-time friend. The shadow was the same as it felt overjoyed as it welcomed her into its embrace, making sure it won’t let it go once more. Without knowing, she suddenly entered the Shadows. “Woah!!” Opening her eyes, she was suddenly floating in this dark purple world. As though she was in space, she couldn’t control her body as she was trying to take hold of the ground.
“Calm down, you are fine.” Fausto grabbed a tight hold of her. “So remember to trust in the shadows. Those who are allowed here have authority here. Just believe you are floating and you will be.” Karma was thinking that as she was feeling like flying. Then all of a sudden she was floating in space.
“I’m flying!!! I’m flying!!!!” Karma said as she was holding on to Fausto. Letting her go, Karma then went around as she kept flying around the shadow space. “This is so cool. I didn't know I could do this.”
