Chapter 22- Questionning foxes, the system and everything

After another training session that consisted mostly of fighting against those training dummies, I was pretty tired. The power of friendship skill seemed like it was pretty good, at least. I felt like it was actually helping me coordinate with Nix, resulting in us having an easier time against the dummies than the previous day.

Still, Nix and I were tired out after that. Nothing too bad, but we were quite gd to be able to sit down for a moment. Camity was there too, but she was sitting on the ceiling because of course she was.

"So, I've been wondering, what exactly is the system? I mean, I hadn't really questionned it before, but it is quite strange. I had always thought of it as something that was always there, but it just changed." (Dragonfly)

"Ah, that's tricky question. The system is like... some sort of spell that's being cast by the world itself. That's why it's possible for something to interfere with it to change it." (Camity)

I looked up at her and gave her a quizzical look. Her answer made sense, sure, but it mostly lead me to even more questions. Mainly, how could the world cast a spell in the first pce? Or even better, why was it casting a spell?

"Now, I know what you are about to ask. How can something that's not alive in the first pce use magic? To that, my answer is simple. Wait, no, this is actually complicated. Basically, the world is kind of sentient." (Camity)

"The world is sentient? Can we talk to it then?" (Nix)

"No, you cannot, unfortunately. It usually acts through the system, tho. Well, when the system isn't getting hijacked, at least." (Camity)

Nix seemed a bit disapointed to learn that making friends with the world wasn't an option. Luckily, she quickly went back to normal. She had probably thought of something else.

"So, why did the world create the system?" (Dragonfly)

"To protect itself, of course. I mean, have you seen the amount of monsters that run around trying to destroy it? You saw that bug from the void swarm yesterday. Monsters like that would make a whole mess if the system wasn't there to make people strong enough to fight them off." (Camity)

I was expecting something stranger, honestly. That was surprisingly logical. Did that mean that the reason why killing monsters allowed us to level up was to give people an incentive to rid the world of them? That expined why killing anything other than a monster wouldn't contribute to leveling up.

Ok, looking up at the roof to see Camity was starting to get uncomfortable. I settled for ying down on the floor face-up. That was much better. In fact, it was made even better by the fact that a rge cushion had appeared under me at some point.

"So, the world wants to get rid of monsters because they want to destroy it? But why would all monsters want to destroy the world?" (Dragonfly)

  "Because they are evil!" (Nix)

"That's not entirely wrong. Monsters are beings made of hatred, down to their very souls. They hate everything for the sin of existing. I'm sure that you've seen the look in a monster's eyes before." (Camity)

I thought back to the group of goblins that I had beaten a few days earlier. They certainly did feel like they were practically oozing malice. Their hate towards literally everything did expin why they would want to destroy the world.

"Well, do you have any other questions? Some philosophical questions about the nature of existence, maybe?" (Camity)

"What? No, I don't think so?" (Dragonfly)

"Anyways, the answer is 42." (Camity)

  I was supremely confused.

  "The answer to what?" (Dragonfly)

  "No one knows." (Camity)

As I tried to figure out what she was even talking about, Nix walked up to me. She looked quite annoyed about something, so I sat up on the cushion to see what was wrong.

"My tail's fur got all tangled during training and I can't quite get the right angle to fix it. Please help." (Nix)

Before I could react, I had a brush in my hand and a fluffy white fox tail on my p. I wasn't sure as to how I had ended up in that situation, but I was not about to question it. Her tail was perfectly fine apart from a couple spots that were slightly tangled. It really wasn't as bad as her reaction made it sound.

The strangest thing about my current situation, however, was the face that Camity was making. She looked like she was surprised? That wasn't an expression that I thought I'd see her make in a thousand years. I think that I heard her mutter something about sisters, but I wasn't too sure.

As I began to brush Nix's tail, she seemed to rex quite a bit. Well, she was absolutely enjoying it, at least. She had closed her eyes and seemed to to almost be dozing off. To be fair, I certainly also did not mind helping her with this either considering how soft her tail was.
