Chapter 10: The Undead City, part one (114)

  Chapter 10: The Undead City

Evil Eye, previously known as Keno Fasris Invern, walked down the street of E-Rantel. The city had changed for better or worse. The streets were slightly more dead now. That wasn’t to say that they were empty, far from it.

If one simply walked down any of the streets, one could see that they were busy and full of life. It was just that the undead stalked the streets as well. Death knights walked behind their human handlers, and the men-at-arms that walked them gave the people peace of mind that the undead didn’t go on a rampage.

Speaking of the men-at-arms, they carried themselves like seasoned soldiers. Their backs straight and upright. Their gazes searched for anything that would endanger the people of the kingdom. Armor covered them.

The thick ptes of blue metal were bound together with rivets and woven straps. They covered every vital area of the men-at-arms. Half cloaks covered their top halves. Rings of metal woven and stitched into the thick canvass for the half cloaks. Emblems of the sorcerer kingdom were sewn into the garments. This showed who they were of course.

Evil Eye couldn’t help but think that they were maybe a little over kill. After all, who would attack such a pce? This was the trade capital of the region, sorcerer kingdom or no. In fact, she could tell that they were utter overkill. The pte they wore was painted Mythril, after all.

The bdes they carried were also overkill. The sabers were enchanted mythril as well. The curve of the bde looked wicked as it caught the noon light. The guard was simple, yet extremely protective. The real threat to any foes was the weapon in their hands.

She recognized the weapon in the men’s hands only because of her time with the thirteen heroes. It was a rifle, a lever action rifle to be more specific. She didn’t know the specific name of the model of gun. Yet it didn’t matter. She had a rather solid impression of its power.

Evil Eye shook her head, the tales of what had happened when this weapon had first shown its face falling out of her mind. That was a tale for another day. Right now, she needed to figure out where the guild building was and try to find her hero, Momon.

The man himself hadn’t been seen outside of the Sorcerer Kingdom in years. Yet, she couldn’t wait to see him any longer. She had been beating around the bush when it came to this.

Before Ainz Ooal Gown had formed this nation, she had wanted to visit him. Yet when the city of E-Rantel had fallen under undead control, she had pulled those ideas back. After all, she didn’t want the king or anyone else to figure out that she was undead.

As she walked down the street, she looked for the guild building, her mind running amuck with thoughts of them. Both the undead King and her hero. She wanted to see Momon, yet her cowardness when it came to her heart had shown and she stopped herself.

Only now, with egging on from her friends, did she actually come here. the way into the city had been simple, simply resist the fear aura of a death knight. Since she was undead, she resisted easily enough, and she even shocked the guards slightly. Though their training stopped them from showing it on their faces.

She had been smug about that. The fact that the tyrant’s own men had been impressed with her had made her think about how strong she was, in comparison to soldiers of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Though, after thinking about it, it was nothing compared to the power of the tyrant himself.

Finally, she spotted it. Down the main street that had been renamed to, “Apple str.” It sat there. The guild hall. It was very different from what she remembered of this particur branch of the guild looking like.

The main street that had been revamped and paved had many different businesses along its path. The main one of course, being the Adventures’ Guild, now beled the, “National Adventuring Guild.” It was truly sad, yet strange to think that the guild had been nationalized.

Two fg poles stood erect in front of the building, one of the fgs being the fg of the nation she was currently in, the other being a fg of the Re-Estize kingdom. She looked at it, slightly shocked that they would fly a fg of the Re-Estize kingdom in front of one of their national branches.

She shook her head away from those shocked thoughts, and walked toward the doors of the building proper. Her mind was awash with ideas and thoughts of what to say if he was right there. What would she say to him once she saw him? she pnned to ask him why he sided with the Sorcerer King. She pnned to ask him why he still lived here after all this time.

Yet, as she stood in front of the doorway, and her hand hovering over the strange handle, she stopped and took a deep breath. She had a thought, what if he forgot about me? About our first meeting? She stopped such strange thoughts, and walked in.

As she stepped in, she noticed how busy it was. There was no request board, yet there was some sort of mission board. On it was racks of cardboard cards, with mission statements on them. People of differing races stood in lines behind them, checking what they had to offer.

Lizardmen, Dwarves, a few elves and half elves, along with humans of course; they all were here. Even a few goblins were there. They all had ptes around their necks. She looked to the left of the hall. There, multiple different desks lined the wall, with receptionists sitting in each. Many of them were women, some of them were men though.

Evil Eye noticed how little people saw her. The usual reaction was everyone looking at her with a little awe, and then going back to business. No one did this here, though. Maybe they were used to heroes around these parts? After all, her secret crush, Momon lived here.

The only person that lingered on her was a girl that looked about her own physical age. She was tall for her age, though. Her garb was modeled after the garb of the men-at-arms of the nation. Her hands were also covered in long gloves. Across her chest was a holstered pistol, and a metal Mage’s Staff was at her hip.

She was sitting by a table in the middle of the hall. She was the only one at the table, the rest of the chairs were pushed in neatly. Evil Eye wondered who she was, and why she was looking at her strangely.

It was strange to see such a look. Like she was sizing up a monster to defeat. Yet Evil Eye was one of the most famous adventurers in the known world. Though, she had gotten this look before.

She decided to ask this girl if she had seen Momon. Maybe his whereabouts were well known? After all, he was rather famous in this city, most notably more than her.

She walked over to the bck haired girl, and sat down next to her. The girl looked at her, her gaze slightly perturbed now. Evil Eye didn’t really care, she would leave shortly after all.

“Hello there, I’m Evil Eye. I was wondering if you knew where the Adventurer Momon was? I wanted to meet with him and discuss several things about what happened a decade ago,” she expined to the girl, and she saw her raise her brow slightly.

“Hello, a pleasure to meet one of my seniors. I am Tatania, an arcane gunslinger,” she said in a very professional tone of voice, “I’m actually his Neophyte Ward,” at the confused head tilt of Evil Eye, Tatania expined.

“A Neophyte Ward is a new rank for those under the age of sixteen. We’re basically squires for the teachers that choose us and are approved. It’s so those that are young that want to be adventurers but are young learn the ropes and don’t get hurt unnecessarily,” she expined, and Evil Eye nodded her head.

“Then it’s a good thing that I met you. I hate to ask, but when will he be back, I need to ask him some things,” Evil Eye said, and Tantania leaned forward with a frown.

“Why do you need to see him?” she said.

“I just want to ask him some things about what happened a decade ago like I said. Myt reasons are personal, so nothing about national security or things of that nature if you’re worried,” she retorted with a bit of a bite.

Tatania was about to bite back, when Evil Eye heard footsteps and a deep voice speak. She recognized that voice. It was the voice of her hero.

“what’s happening here, then?” he spoke.
