Despite the fact that seeing a catgirl sleep in a ridiculous spot was pretty funny, we still needed to wake the receptionist up. I mean, we did kind of need her to do her job.
"Hello?" (Dragonfly)
That got no reaction from her. Not sure as to what I was expecting.
"Hello! Can you wake up?" (Nix)
Surprisingly, however, even Nix's more enthusiastic attempt didn't work. This was akward. I wasn't too sure as to what the appropriate thing to do was, but thankfully my friend had no such worries and began poking at the catgirl's arm.
No, that still did not get any reaction. I began getting suspicious when Nix's intensified poking still failed to get any results. I observed the receptionist face and realised that her eyes were, in fact, slightly open.
"Nix, she's only pretending to be sleeping." (Dragonfly)
"No, I'm really sleeping." (receptionist)
Apparently, being found out wasn't going to stop her.
"Oh, ok. Wait, but people don't talk while sleeping?" (Nix)
"I'm just talking in my sleep, it's normal." (lying catgirl)
"You are a liar! I'll show you what happens to lying meanies!" (Nix)
Anyways, that's how a certain receptionist ended up with an ice cube inside of her shirt. I probably could have stopped it. Unfortunately for the catgirl, I did not see any good reason to do so.
Point is, we were now standing in front of an annoyed, but very awake, receptionist.
"Alright, fine, I'll do my job. What do you want? Oh, right, I'm supposed to introduce myself. Name's Eva." (Eva)
"We were told to come here to receive our guild cards." (Dragonfly)
After hearing our request, Eva began messing with some sort of magical device. I couldn't tell what it was exactly, but it seemed to be projecting some sort of screen that was only visible to her, kinda like the system.
"Alright, names?" (Eva)
"I'm Nix Vulpes and this is Dragonfly!" (Nix)
"This should work, just give it a bit..." (Eva)
Two bronze cards appeared on the desk shortly afterwards. The receptionist pushed one towards each of us before leaning back on her chair and closing her eyes.
Picking up my guild card, I looked it over. From what I could tell, it was saying that I was a C-rank adventurer. That seemed a bit high, but then again, I had no clue as to what that meant.
"So, what are we supposed to do now?" (Dragonfly)
"Wait, what? You actually want me to give the tutorial? You aren't just trying to force me to work more, are you?" (Eva)
I was a bit confused, honestly. Of course new adventurers would need an expnation as to how the Adventurers Guild worked. It's not like this was public knowledge, right?
"Fine, I can see that you are just completely confused. I'll expin, I guess. So, everyone gets a rank ranging from F to A followed by S, with S being the highest one. No, do not ask me how S ended up being better than A, I have no clue. Anyways, you can pick quests from that bounty board over there as long as they are under or equal your own rank. There might be clients that ask for specific adventurers sometimes too, but that's rare, so don't worry about it." (Eva)
That was a lot of new information, but it seemed like a pretty straightforward system.
"Anyways, to turn in quests and all that, just come here with proof of completion or whatever item the quest asks for. Do come only after 3pm tho, there are other receptionists working at those hours, so I can throw the work at them." (Eva)
"I feel like there's something to be said about the ethics of forcing others to work in your pce." (Dragonfly)
The receptionist completely ignored me and just went straight back to napping. She did, however, say one st comment before drifting off to sleep.
"If you have any questions, wait until someone else shows up to answer them." (Eva)
"Don't worry, I'll just make more ice if we need to ask you a question." (Nix)
While she sounded perfectly innocent, the smile on her face told me that she knew exactly what she was doing.
"Upon further examination, if you want to ask a question, you can just ask me." (Eva)
That was pretty convenient, as I did have several questions to ask.
"So... how do these ranks work? What does having C-rank mean in terms of power? Also, how do we increase our rank?" (Dragonfly)
"Well, C-rank is... pretty good, I guess. A C-rank adventurer is generally competent enough to protect himself and all that. I think the average level is 30 or something. Haven't read the guild rules in a good while tho. Oh, and for increasing your rank, you'll have to pass another test once you are estimated to be good enough. " (Eva)
That was a pretty helpful expnation, actually. I was about to thank her, but the receptionist looked like she had fallen asleep again. To be fair, I had a creeping suspicion that she was still very much awake, but I couldn't be bothered to care.
