Following the guildmaster's instructions, we entered a fairly rge training room. In fact, it looked like a smaller copy of the training room that was in Camity's mansion. That expined where the design came from. Even the training dummies were identical. I had a feeling that these ones were unable to fight back, however.
"Oh, hello. Can I help you?" (???)
I was a bit surprised by the voice, but I quickly realised that it was just an old man sitting on a chair in one of the corners. He looked like a human, as far as I could tell.
"Hello! A small man told us that we needed to pass some sort of test here." (Nix)
"Oh? Are you girls want to become adventurers? Well alright, as the instructor in charge of training new adventurers around here, I will take care of that. Oh, right, where are my manners. I am Walce, a retired B-rank adventurer." (Walce)
"I'm Nix! Oh, and this is Dragonfly! So, what's the test?" (Nix)
One of us was excited, at least. I didn't really feel at ease, but that was probably just due to my dislike for interacting with strangers. As such, I opted to just let Nix handle the talking.
"Ah, yes, the test. Well, it's quite simple, really. You two just have to spar against me and I'll evaluate your power to see if you two match the Guild's standards, alright?" (Walce)
"Okay!" (Nix)
I nodded to show that I agreed too. Right after confirming that we didn't have any problems with the test, he activated a rge magic circle that was in the floor. I could've swore that it wasn't there earlier, but it was probably just invisible when not in use.
"There we go, the safety barrier is in pce. You don't have to worry about harming me, that magic makes it so that getting hurt is pretty much impossible. Don't ask me how it works, I have no clue. Well, feel free to attack whenever you feel like it." (Walce)
After those words, he got into a fighting stance, but didn't take out any weapons. Nix looked more than ready to charge head-on, but I just wanted to make sure of a couple things first. This man might be old now, but he had been a B-rank adventurer at some point. He had to be pretty good. Well, I wasn't exactly sure as to what being B-rank represented, but it did sound impressive.
"So, can we use weapons?" (Dragonfly)
"Yes, you can use whatever you wan-" (Walce)
The poor man was interrupted by Nix who seemed to have decided that this was the perfect time to attack by sending ice arrows his way. To be fair, he had his attention turned towards me, so it was a good oppening. He did manage to dodge out of the way, but he was now dealing with Nix trying to stab him with her dagger. I'd have expected Walce to get at least a few scratches from blocking with his arms, but it seemed like the barrier was actually doing it's job.
Deciding to help out, I took out my sword and ran over to help beat up the elderly. Wait, no, that sounds wrong. Anyways, the point is that we didn't even leave him any room to defend himself. Things might have gone differently had he actually used a weapon, but it felt like he had underestimated us. He was asking for a loss, really.
'That's what people who dare to look down on me deserve, honestly.'
"Alright, alright, you pass, you can stop swinging at me now." (Walce)
"Already?" (Nix)
"Yes, you have clearly shown that you can handle yourselves in a fight. I hadn't had anyone your age beat me like that since back in the days... Ah, those were good times. Well, you passed the test, feel free to head back to the reception to collect your guild cards and all that. I'm just going to sit down a bit, I'm getting a bit old for this sort of stuff, clearly." (Walce)
My friend promptly sheathed her dagger and walked out towards the entrance, snapping me out of my irritated state. Draconic pride was a pain to deal with...
"Yay, we won! Bye!" (Nix)
And so, we walked out of there victorious with a smile on our faces. The only thing that managed to affect our mood was the fact that the receptionist was currently just sleeping on the counter. No, I didn't mean at the counter, she was ying down on the counter and sleeping. This was pretty tame compared to most of the nonsense that I had dealt with recently, but it was still pretty funny.
It absolutely did not look comfortable, but who was I to judge? I did like to use metal coins as a pillow, after all.
What was more concerning was the fact that she was doing this on the job, but she didn't seem to have much work to do at the moment.
